Fish are intelligent and emotional, yet they have largely been left out of the many hard-won improvements in welfare standards for farmed animals. ⁠ ⁠ As wild fish populations collapse from overfishing, unsanitary and inhumane fish farms are rapidly growing. In fact, nearly half of all the fish people eat come from fish farms. At these operations, fish are raised in ponds or tanks that hold thousands of fish at a time. These animals suffer extreme stress in overcrowded conditions with poor water quality.⁠ ⁠ Fish are individuals as unique and complex as those who live on land. They deserve better! Scientists predict that around 2048 we will run out of edible fish at our present consumption rates! Our oceans are actually the lungs of our planet were over 50% of our oxygen comes from and over 70% of our protein! So how can we reduce the pressure as it is a proven fact that our oceans will recover if we allow them to. Here are a few things that work! 1 science-based catch limits - when they're enforced 2 Marine protected areas when they are real - not the paper parks but only claim to be Marine protected areas but allow all animals to be removed 3 rights-based Fisheries - giving fishermen ownership like you see in Iceland and New Zealand 4 consumer pressure allowing people to refuse illegal or unsustainable Seafood 5 switching to a plant-based lifestyle and removing all the pressure from overfishing #fish #overfishing #MPA
