These little Northwestern Pond Turtles, Actinemys marmorata, hatched here last fall. They are such an interesting species. I have seen the Southwestern species in the wild, and hope to see this species in the wild when I can get to Northern California at some point.

Hey! Look who I found. Thought maybe it was our buddy we found last week, but this yellow-bellied slider has 2 lovely eyes and a snapper of a bill. Think she is a girl as her plastron is flat, and boys have a dent in them. These large, semi-aquatic freshwater turtles are native to the southeastern U.S., and known for its yellow belly, yellow stripes on its neck and shell, and a distinct yellow spot behind the eye. So they are not native to Maryland and may have been transported as pets. Or maybe they are finding their way North as this area becomes as warm as the south! This girly was on the ground next to the pond, and may have been looking for a spot to lay eggs. I was worried she might be met by visiting pups nearby, so I gave her a two step trip back to the waters edge. If that was her goal I am sure she will head out again soon.

Ever wondered what we feed the hundreds of endangered western painted turtles in our care?⁠ ⁠ A variety of foods!⁠ From bloodworms, crickets, and krill to shrimp and sole fillets, the turtles in our care are fed every morning. Once they've finished their meal, we get cleaning 🫧⁠ ⁠ In this video you can see our Conservation Programs Assistant, Alyssa, feed the turtles mysis shrimp chunks. ⁠YUM.⁠ ⁠ More about WPC's B.C. Projects - western painted turtle:⁠ In the wetlands of B.C.’s Fraser Valley, western painted turtles face many challenges, especially as eggs and tiny hatchlings. Since 2012, we’ve been working to improve their odds of survival by protecting nests, collecting eggs from vulnerable nests and artificially incubating them, and head-starting new hatchlings in our program located at the @greatervancouverzoo before releasing them back to the wild. This is an adult Eastern mud turtle. They are semi-aquatic turtles that are often found in ditches, swamps, ponds and marshes. They are usually burrowing in thick vegetation, wet sand or mud. They are similar to the box turtle, where they have a double-hinged bottom shell. So I spotted this not-so-little guy today coming out of Fern Hammock Springs at Juniper Springs Recreation Area. Very impressive. Have you ever seen a snapping turtle? And if you didn’t know, Juniper is one of the springs in the Florida Springs Passport (@flspringspassport ) and it’s on the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway (@floridablackbearscenicbyway )!! What's cuter than a tiny western painted turtle hatchling? A tiny western painted turtle hatchling doing yoga 🧘 Turtles are ectotherms, commonly known as "cold-blooded" (but they don't actually have cold blood). They can't regulate their body temperature like humans can and rely on their environment to help warm up or cool down! That's exactly why this little turtle is outstretching its arms and legs. By stretching out and opening up those webbed limbs, they increase the surface area on their body which in this case, under a heat lamp, helps them warmup faster. This smart little turtle is one of many turtles in our western painted turtle conservation lab in B.C., located at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Hatching eggs out in our lab, we feed and protect these turtles until they're ready to be released back into the wild. This little one will be released this upcoming field season, where they can add to their population numbers in the wild 💚 More about WPC's B.C. Stumbled upon this red eared slider crossing the road so I helped them get across just to make sure they were safe! Even though red eared sliders are an incredibly invasive species (most ponds around here are full of them) I still didn’t wanna hit the little dude! If you see a turtle crossing the street and you want to help it please only move them across the road in whichever direction they were already going/facing! Most turtles live their entire lives in a very small range, if you were to move this turtle out of its range it will spend its entire life trying to find home! 🐢🌷🏔️#turtle #wildlife #virginia #getoutside #iliketurtles

🐢 As a solo rehabber, you have to get creative about examining feisty patients, like this one! 🤪 I wanted to have a look at Honor’s plastron (underside of the shell) which can be difficult with a snappity snapper like her! 🙃 In cases like this, I typically lift her up and take a short video of her underside and then watch it back frame by frame in slow-mo. It’s the quickest, easiest way I’ve figured how to do this by myself in a way that causes the least amount of stress, for both of us! 😅 Mostly what I was looking for today was just to make sure she isn’t developing any pressure sores or shell rot in the areas that I can’t normally see when I’m just looking down on her in her tank. Thankfully, everything looks good under there! 🙌 A funny thing happened after I finished her physical exam and tank cleaning today – she laid an egg! 🥚 More on that in my next post- stay tuned! 💚 . . . #turtlerescue #savetheturtles #commonsnappingturtle #wildliferehabilitation #sharetheplanet
