✨Brushing your teeth with a minty toothpaste might seem like a small thing, but it can actually bring relief from the anxiety lump. The coolness of the mint, the texture of the toothpaste, the cold water, the motion of brushing, all create sensations that can compete with the hyperfocus you have on your throat. As you move the muscles in your mouth, tongue, and throat, you can also release some of the built-up tension in that area, which can also help.
 ✨And there’s something else happening too! When you brush your teeth, you’re telling your brain something: I’m doing something normal. Everything’s okay. That message matters, because anxiety thrives on signs of danger, but a normal everyday action can help counter that.
 ✨This simple act can interrupt the cycle of anxiety that keeps the sensation going. You feel anxious, you get the anxiety throat lump/tightness, this makes you hyperfocus on it, which then causes you even more anxiety, the sensation worsens, and round and round the cycle goes.
 ✨Even though this isn’t a cure for anxiety, it’s a small, practical way to help manage this sensation in the moment. And sometimes, those small shifts can make a big difference, especially when you keep doing them. Comment ‘nocturnal help’ to download my free nocturnal panic attack talk down For a long time, this was my reality. Every single night. Almost always at the exact same time: 1:30am. Like clockwork. Even as my daytime anxiety and panic started to improve, the night panic didn’t immediately follow, in fact it seemed to get worse. It was as if my nervous system still needed an outlet. Like I had to “pay the panic tax” at night if I didn’t panic during the day. Sometimes it was one attack. Sometimes multiple in the same night. I’d wake up suddenly with my heart racing, full of adrenaline, completely disoriented. My body felt like it was in immediate danger, even though I’d been asleep seconds before. The confusion made it worse. Why now? What triggered this? What’s wrong with me? Nocturnal panic can feel especially cruel because there’s no obvious cause. You’re not overthinking. You’re not worrying. Your body just sounds the alarm anyway. What I eventually learned is that nocturnal panic isn’t random or dangerous, it’s not fully understood but the main accepted theory involved a ‘fear of lack of vigilence’ You’re so used to being on edge, that your body sees that moment of letting go, and falling asleep as a threat. That understanding didn’t instantly stop the attacks, but it changed how I responded to them. And that’s what made the difference. I had to let the panic happen, and while it’s definitely harder at night, because of the disorientation, it is possible. The more I surrendered, the shorter the episodes got. If you’re dealing with night panic right now, please know this. You’re not broken. You’re not going backwards. And you’re not alone.
