🙄🙄🙄 There aren’t enough eye rolls in the world for me to respond to the number of comments I have gotten from patients with some iteration of “my doctor said I don’t have this because… it’s rare/ it’s not real/ it didn’t show up on testing.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🧑🏻‍⚕️Medical providers are really in a tough spot oftentimes when they don’t have the knowledge to diagnose and treat these conditions (also known as the “trifecta”). But. It is never OK to tell a patient these things because you don’t know enough and then not refer elsewhere. And I do recognize that many times there aren’t alternatives or specialists to refer to… in which case I do expect that providers do their research and try harder. 🧑🏻‍⚕️We have to do better. Spending time at #dysconf2024 has me more fired up than ever about increasing awareness and helping providers to know what to do for patients with unexplained symptoms. Of course it’s not always POTS, EDS, and/or MCAS. But when a patient comes with clear symptoms and has done their research, please dignify them with legitimate testing or refer out!!! 🧑🏻‍⚕️If you’re a provider wanting more information about POTS and co-occurring conditions, check out my course at bit.ly/potsclinician or find more info on my website. 👋 Hi! I’m Emily Rich, an occupational therapist and PhD researcher studying POTS, EDS, and co-occurring conditions. POTS stands for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a form of autonomic dysfunction, and EDS is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder where the hypermobile form is much more common than previously believed. I help patients and providers learn more about evaluation and intervention for these conditions.

When people refer to me as “fully healed”, it always makes me cringe a little bit. I never promote that narrative on my page because I don’t think it reflects my reality. One of the biggest secrets on my own healing journey has been the acceptance of living the fullest life possible, despite all the things I need to do to maintain my health that my friends will never ever need to think about. Hypermobility is life long. It often comes with pain and dysautonomia as an undercurrent. Accepting that from the beginning of my long covid healing journey, was liberating. I believe we can turn the volume all the way down on this condition. But I definitely see it as a volume channel rather than an off button. Sometimes the volumes gets turned up in flares, and that’s just part of it. Sometimes it’s frustrating, but I try to ground myself in the gift of being alive and take the good with the bad. I’d rather show up to the party limping with one eye open and an ice pack on my head than not show up at all. My healing journey has also come in phases. 3 years ago, after I completed the CHOPS protocol, I had a goal to bike 200 miles through the mountains of Portugal. I trained so long and hard for that, slowly building up the capacity. The ride was SO hard, and mostly didn’t feel good. This was before I started working with @thehypermobilechiro and body wide excruciating chronic pain was starting to take the lead in my daily thoughts as hypermobility was becoming impossible to ignore. But even though when I look at pictures and remember how much physical pain I was in, I also look at pictures of my husband and best friends and remember how freeing it felt to be next to the ocean for a week straight. The good comes with the bad. You can feel courageous, afraid, in pain, liberated, happy and sad all in the span of one day. The key is not letting the bad negate the good, but rather letting the contrast enhance the good. Now that I understand how to manage pain, it makes me even more grateful to remember those hard times. I’m glad I didn’t skip the ride bc it wasn’t perfect. “Fully healed” is a magical place I have yet to arrive at, but my life is still full to the brim 💗
