Sunny Hollow is, for the bulk of a child's years here, a screen-free learning environment. This is not a nostalgic position or a reaction against technology. It is a considered, developmental commitment grounded in more than a century of observation about how children actually learn. Young children learn through direct physical engagement with the world. Real materials--glass that can break, water that can spill, wood with genuine weight and texture--offer resistance, consequence, and sensory information that a screen cannot replicate. They build, through repeated hands-on use, the neurological and physical foundations that underlie reading, writing, mathematical thinking, and sustained concentration. Our goal is not to shelter students from the digital world; it’s to prepare them to meet it with discernment, confidence, and balance. They know how to focus without distraction, communicate with compassion, and think critically about what they see. In a world that often rushes children toward screens before they’re developmentally ready, Sunny Hollow offers something rare: the gift of growing up human first.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀: 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 💚 e loved welcoming parents to our Healthy Early Years evening back in February 💚 As part of supporting healthy development, it’s important to stay informed on the latest guidance for young children. Recent advice highlighted by BBC News suggests that children under five should be limited to around one hour of screen time per day, while under-twos should avoid watching screens alone. It also encourages parents to steer clear of fast-paced content and instead use screens together where possible. These small, mindful choices can make a big difference in supporting focus, wellbeing and early development 🌱 If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how we support healthy routines in our nurseries, feel free to get in touch. 🎥 Video credit: BBC - https://www.instagram.com/reels/DWY1AyUFWWu/ #HealthyEarlyYears #EarlyYearsDevelopment #LittlePeopleNurseries #ParentSupport #ChildDevelopment

A good reminder: One of the most powerful things you can do for your child’s development is share books together. Flip through the pages. Talk about the pictures. Let your child turn the book upside down if they want. Those early experiences with books are how children begin discovering language, stories, and the joy of reading. 📚💛 #ReachOutAndRead #ReadTogether #EarlyLiteracy #Parenting #HealthyDevelopment

We spend a lot of time designing technology for kids. But how often do we ask them what they actually need from it? Michael Preston, Executive Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop (@sesameworkshop), shares findings from a global research project across countries, asking children to define their own well-being in digital spaces. Their answers: → Autonomy and agency → Help recognizing their emotions → A sense of growing competence → Real social connection and belonging → Space for creativity and imagination Not engagement metrics. Not time-on-app. What kids said they actually needed. That's the foundation of designing technology that genuinely serves children. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #ChildCenteredDesign #DigitalWellbeing #KidsAndTech #ADoseOfOptimism #SesameStreet #ChildrensHealth #HealthcareInnovation #EdTech

When people hear “assistive technology for vision and hearing,” they often imagine specialized equipment used in very specific settings, but in preschool classrooms, assistive technology for seeing and hearing can be much simpler. That might look like using high-contrast picture cards so important information stands out during a game or group activity, providing tactile letters so children can feel the shapes of the alphabet while learning early literacy skills, or even introducing a modified keyboard at the classroom computer so children can more easily find and press the keys they want. Teaching Practice #6 focuses on adapting activities and materials so children can clearly see, hear, and explore what’s happening in the lesson. Small adaptations can remove barriers that might otherwise keep children on the sidelines. In Step Up AT coaching, assistive technology doesn’t always mean adding something new. Often it means noticing how a small adjustment can remove a barrier that was easy to miss. Next week, we’ll look at how adapting writing tools and activities can give children new ways to express their ideas. #StepUpAT #AssistiveTechnology #InclusivePreschool #EarlyChildhoodEducation #ATCoaching
