In 2021, an Australian man received an accidental transfer of 1.1 million dollars from a cryptocurrency exchange into his personal account. Instead of reporting the error, he began spending the money, using it for luxury items and transferring portions to other accounts. Authorities later discovered the mistake and charged him with dealing with proceeds of crime. During court proceedings in 2023, he was offered a deal to avoid jail time if he repaid the full amount. He refused. The judge ultimately sentenced him to one year in prison, citing his repeated refusal to cooperate and his belief that the money was his to keep once it landed in his account. The case sparked widespread debate about morality, entitlement, and whether honesty still holds weight when life changing money appears by accident.
