Comment ME below and I’ll send you a full video on exactly how to correct this. Why does coning happen? Coning = pressure pushing forward through the linea alba (midline of your abs). It usually happens when: • You hold your breath • You bear down • You brace hard without engaging deep core properly • The movement is too advanced for your current core strength The fix is mostly about breath + deep core coordination, not just “tightening your abs harder.” If you want to fix it you want to learn 360° breathing with controlled exhale + deep core engagement. This is extremely beneficial whether you’re pregnant, postpartum or neither. 360 breathing is the BASIS of deep core work and engagement and if you don’t know how to do this it will be hard to rehab your core postpartum. When the muscles along your midline, especially the rectus abdominis, start to push outward, it’s usually a sign that the deeper core system isn’t doing its job. The transverse abdominis should help draw everything inward and stabilize, and when it’s not engaging well, pressure has nowhere to go but forward. Check out few of many exercises we will be doing throughout the “Postpartum New Year Challenge” on Monday Jan. 5th 🙏 This outward bulging (often called doming or coning) reflects a way where pressure is managed poorly. Telling postpartum women to ‘just engage your core’ skips an important step, retraining the system that makes engagement possible. Instead of creating balanced tension through the core, the body pushes pressure into the abdominal wall and down toward the pelvic floor, which can reinforce weakness over time. A more effective approach is to train the core with intention, using the breath, especially a controlled exhale, while the abs are in a more lengthened position. This reduces over-reliance on the rectus abdominis and encourages the deeper core muscles to step in. The goal is not more force, but better tension and control. ❤️
