This is a physical demonstration of 15 uncoupled pendulums, each with a slightly different length. Released at the same time, their individual frequencies cause the entire system to create traveling waves, standing waves, beats, and even moments of apparent "chaos". But nothing here is random. The longest pendulum completes 51 oscillations in 60 seconds. Each shorter one swings one more time than the last, so the shortest (15th) completes 65 oscillations per minute. Over time, their motions drift in and out of sync, creating mesmerizing wave patterns (all due to small frequency differences). Each pendulum swings in simple harmonic motion, like a sine wave in space and time. It helps visualizing: • Constructive and destructive interference • Phase shifts over time • Beats, wave patterns, and synchronization • A real-life, physical Fourier visualization This is not just a toy, this is actually how oscillatory systems, sound waves, and even quantum states behave. It is pretty much some string, weight, and math together, after all. (**Originally designed by Richard Berg (Am. J. This Pendulum Wave Is Pure Magic! #physics #synchronisation #pendulum #harmonic #manim Experience the mesmerizing beauty of physics with this rainbow pendulum wave simulation! Watch as fifteen independent pendulums of slightly different lengths create dancing wave patterns, moving from perfect synchronization into beautiful chaos and back again. This video visualizes the principles of simple harmonic motion and demonstrates how a pendulum's length affects its period. By following the equation theta(t) = theta_max * cos(sqrt(g/L) * t), these spheres create a rhythmic display that is both educational and incredibly satisfying to watch.

This video is a hypnotic demonstration of a Pendulum Wave. While it looks like a coordinated dance, it’s actually 15 individual pendulums acting independently based on one simple rule: length determines timing. The Science Breakdown The secret lies in the length of the strings. Each string is slightly shorter than the one before it. In physics, the time it takes for a pendulum to complete one full swing (its period) is calculated using formula, L is the length of the string. g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8\text{ m/s}^2). Because each string has a different length (L), each ball has a different "tempo." The shortest string swings the fastest, and the longest swings the slowest. Why do they form patterns? The lengths are precisely calculated so that in a set amount of time (usually 60 seconds), the longest pendulum completes, say, 50 swings, the next one 51, the next 52, and so on. The Wave: At first, they are nearly in sync, creating a smooth wave. The Chaos: As the "faster" balls pull ahead of the "slower" ones, the patterns look random. The Re-sync: Eventually, the mathematical cycles overlap again, and they briefly return to a straight line before starting the cycle over. What looks like randomness here is actually one of the most studied forms of order in physics. This is a double pendulum with ring and bar, a mechanical oscillator set in motion by a simple torque from the hand, then governed by gravity, tension in the arms and the gradual loss of energy to friction and air resistance. For small displacements, it behaves like a simple harmonic pendulum, with regular, predictable swings. When the angles and speeds become larger, the nonlinear terms dominate and the system enters deterministic chaos, where tiny, almost invisible differences in the initial release lead to completely different trajectories over time. In technical language, the equations are deterministic, but the sensitivity to initial conditions makes long term prediction practically impossible. In everyday language, it is a reminder that complexity can emerge from very simple rules. I often think of this when I look at biological rhythms, heartbeats, brain waves, hormone cycles, all influenced by countless small inputs that accumulate into very different paths of health, adaptation and aging. “In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.” ~ Carl G. The X post showcases a 29-second video of a pendulum wave demonstration, where 16 colorful beads on strings of slightly varying lengths swing out of phase to create an illusion of a traveling wave across the array. This visual effect arises from the pendulums' periods differing by small increments (approximately 0.1 seconds), causing sequential peaks and troughs that propagate like a mechanical wave, as described in classical pendulum theory by Huygens in 1673. Popularized in educational settings since the 1990s, such setups reveal emergent wave behaviors from simple harmonic oscillators, with studies confirming phase-locking in coupled systems enhances the wave's coherence and visual appeal.

🌀✨ The Pendulum Wave… When Physics Turns into a Mesmerizing Art Show! The experiment consists of a row of pendulums, each with a very slightly different length. When they all start moving at the same moment, they swing in perfect harmony at first. Gradually, each pendulum begins to drift out of sync due to its tiny difference in length. But instead of descending into complete chaos… something magical happens: The motions transform into a visible wave flowing smoothly across the row, as if a living, breathing entity has come to life. As time passes, the wave changes shape—breaking apart, then coming together again… until, at last, the pendulums return to perfect synchronization, just as they were at the beginning — a full cycle from order to chaos and back to order once more. The secret? 🔍 Each pendulum has its own natural period, determined by its length. That small difference is what creates such a grand harmony. 🎶 A simple experiment… yet a beautiful reminder that differences can create the most stunning forms of unity. 🌌 #physics #stars #space #astronomy #pendulumwave science art universe

This pendulam wave comprises a 60-second cycle, with the longest pendulum completing 51 oscillations and each shorter pendulum having one additional oscillation than the previous. Consequently, the 15th pendulum, the shortest, completes 65 oscillations. Although the pendulums initially fall out of sync due to their varied oscillation periods, after 60 seconds, they harmoniously return to their starting positions, prepared to repeat the synchronized dance.
