TWEardrum ruptures are very painful! So, I’m sharing our story today to not only educate other parents but to also hopefully prevent other kids from having to experience it.💙👇🏻
Ames came home from flag football practice on Sunday afternoon saying his right ear hurt. Knowing we had flown last week for spring break and he had some nasal congestion, I figured it was probably related and he likely had some built up ear pressure. I gave him some Motrin once we got home (which temporarily helped). He and his twin sister started rough housing, which resulted in an accidental slap across his affected ear. It was all downhill from there. He screamed immediately with acute, sharp pain. We put ice on his ear, gave him Tylenol, and consoled him (sister apologized). He finally went to bed. About an hour after falling asleep, he woke up crying with what seemed like the world’s worst ear pain. He was crying hysterically and uncontrollably, saying his right ear hurt and he didn’t know what to do. He was very panicked! This all made my mom heart hurt for him! At this point, I was concerned he had a developing ear infection, but it was too soon to give him more medicine for pain. All of a sudden, he screamed saying, “Mommy, my ear is wet!” and he had sudden relief. All the pain was gone. Being a pediatric nurse practitioner myself, I knew he had perforated his tympanic membrane (eardrum). As soon as his pediatrician’s office opened the next morning (Monday), I got him an appointment. The diagnosis was confirmed and we think it was all due to a developing ear infection combined with the ear slap and recent plane flight. He’s now feeling much better. He has some ear drainage still, his hearing is a little diminished temporarily, and he’s on both an oral antibiotic and antibiotic ear drops to treat the infection. I’m so glad we figured this one out quickly! Now we just wait for the eardrum to heal itself over the next few weeks. And if it doesn’t heal, then we go see an ENT for possible patching. Hoping for the best!💙

DUMost of eardrum perforation requires surgery but first we have to make it dry and free of infection..only in some cases we have to do it wet ear..completely safe surgery with good results

MIA ruptured eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation) is a tear or hole in the thin tissue separating your outer and middle ear, often caused by infections, loud noises, or injury, leading to pain, drainage, and temporary hearing loss, but usually heals within weeks, though some require patches or surgery.
Symptoms
Sudden, sharp ear pain, or sudden relief if pain was from an infection
Fluid draining from the ear (clear, pus, or bloody)
Tinnitus (ear ringing or buzzing)
Partial or complete hearing loss in the affected ear
Dizziness or vertigo
Facial weakness (in severe cases)
Causes
Infections: Middle ear infections causing fluid buildup.
Trauma: A slap to the ear, inserting objects (like cotton swabs) too deep, or head injury.
Pressure Changes (Barotrauma): Flying, scuba diving, or mountain driving.
Loud Noises: Explosions or gunshots.
Treatment & Healing
Most heal on their own: Often within weeks, with simple care.
Keep it Dry: Avoid water in the ear to prevent infection.
Antibiotics: Ear drops for infection.
Eardrum Patch: A paper patch to help it close.
Surgery (Tympanoplasty): For larger tears, using your own tissue to patch it.
When to See a Doctor
Seek immediate medical attention for severe pain, significant hearing loss, fever, or bloody drainage.

MI✨Having large perforations in both eardrums means regular trips to the audiologist for hearing tests and hearing aids checks. I also see my ENT consultant to get my ears looked at and cleaned. Still waiting for the go-ahead for my operations—but fingers crossed it won’t be too much longer!

If you’ve ever trained in MMA, wrestling, or jiu-jitsu, you’ve probably seen someone do exactly what’s happening in this video — pushing, squeezing, or “moving the fluid around” inside a swollen ear.
And while it might look like a quick fix, it actually causes more harm than good.
👇 Here’s what you’re really seeing:
Cauliflower ear happens when trauma causes blood or fluid to collect between the ear’s skin and cartilage. That trapped fluid forms a soft, squishy pocket (a hematoma).
When someone squeezes it, they’re basically forcing the swollen tissue and trapped blood to move around, which is why it’s so painful.
👇 Why this is dangerous:
❌ Squeezing does NOT drain the fluid
❌ It can damage the cartilage even more
❌ It increases inflammation
❌ It raises the risk of infection
❌ It makes permanent deformity more likely
