Part 1: 🌊 Physical & Chemical Oceanography (Basically how the ocean behaves as a physical and chemical system) This includes: Salinity & density: how salt content affects water movement Temperature & stratification: how warm/cold water layers form Ocean circulation: surface currents (wind-driven), deep circulation (thermohaline), upwelling Gas exchange: how oxygen and CO₂ move between the ocean and atmosphere pH & ocean acidification: how CO₂ lowers ocean pH and why it matters How to learn by yourself?! I just gave you the key 🔑 Look up each of these, either with books or online sources, but make sure to triple check the accuracy of your answers! Write down your answers in your notebook with as many details as possible, and keep a lookout for part 2!

Yep, I have a B.A. in Japanese! To get into a PhD or Masters program in physical oceanography, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in something like physics, engineering, or meteorology (or oceanography if your school is lucky enough to have it). I am the only person in my entire program that doesn’t have a STEM degree 😅. I was undecided when I started university and I studied Japanese on the side while I took classes that ultimately drew me to want to pursue oceanography. When my 4 years of university were drawing to a close, I realized I could easily get a B.A. in Japanese but I would need an extra year of school to get the B.A. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science I truly wanted. The B.A. in Atmo and Ocn Science was a completely new degree that they formed when I was a Sophomore (2nd year), so I didn’t know it existed originally. If I had I would have definitely gotten the Atmo and Ocn degree. I really didn’t want to extend my undergraduate education to 5 years. At that point I had taken 2 years worth of mathematics classes, 1 year of physics, 1 semester of chemistry, 1 semester of computer science, and about 10 courses in atmospheric or oceanography. I also did a summer research internship at the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics, and had been working as a student research assistant to an atmospheric scientist. Ultimately, it was enough, and I used all of these experiences to get me into a couple great PhD programs. P.S. I lost most of my photos from Japan. Some of them were taken in Hawaii. 🌊 An exciting breakthrough in wave research took place at Kelly Slater Wave Co (@kswaveco) Surf Ranch, with Scripps Oceanography researchers at the helm. Physical oceanographer Falk Feddersen led a study with scientists from @kswaveco and Naval Postgraduate School (@nps_monterey) using a new instrument to make in situ measurements inside waves, providing us with incredible new knowledge about wave dynamics and their impact. “This is the first time this kind of measurement has been done, and one of the things that Scripps Oceanography is really good at is figuring out how to measure things for the first time, especially when it comes to instrumentation deployed in water,” Feddersen said. The study published in Coastal Engineering Journal introduces the wavedrifter, a small floating instrument that is able to unveil the secrets hidden within waves and their behavior when they break, shedding light on the intense accelerations that occur when waves overturn. Using the perfect conditions provided by the machine wave at Surf Ranch, the researchers also delved into the complex vortex structures created when waves break. These swirling patterns hold crucial insights into wave dynamics, impacting everything from shoreline changes to coastal ecosystems. “It’s amazing to see a facility built for the stoke of surfing being used to advance the science of coastal engineering and wave physics,” said Adam Fincham, chief scientist and founder of @kswaveco. The implementation of the wavedrifter in coastal environments can also help contribute to better coastal planning, improved beach management, and a deeper appreciation for the forces shaping our shores. “This research and developing instruments that help us better understand coastal processes is crucial to protecting and preserving our beaches,” Feddersen said. “Before, turbulence by waves breaking would be measured by proxy, whereas now we can measure it directly.” The research and development of the wavedrifter was made possible thanks to the Mark (‘Marko’) Walk Wolfinger Surfzone Processes Research Fund.
