7 behaviors that feel “normal” when you’ve been in survival mode too long 👇 (But they’re actually signs your nervous system needs support.) 1. Feeling more at ease when you’re busy than when you’re resting. Rest makes you restless. Stillness feels unsafe. So you stay in motion, not because you want to but because your body doesn’t know what else to do. 2. Snapping at the people you love, then instantly feeling shame. It’s not about anger. It’s about a system running on fumes. When you’re maxed out, even a small request can feel like a threat. 3. Not knowing how to answer “what do you want?” You’ve spent so long focusing on what others need, what’s expected, and what’s “right” that you forgot how to check in with you. 4. Overthinking simple decisions. Survival mode makes your brain feel like every choice carries the weight of the world. It’s not that you’re indecisive, it’s that your system is overloaded. 5. Avoiding joy or softness because it feels unfamiliar. When you’ve lived in constant stress, calm can feel suspicious. Pleasure can feel “too much.” Your body might reject the very things you’re craving. 6. Being hyper-independent to the point of isolation. You tell yourself, “I’m fine” but deep down, you’re just scared to need anyone. Because needing has hurt before. 7. Getting things done… but never really feeling done. No matter how much you check off the list, the internal pressure never stops. Productivity becomes your coping mechanism. These aren’t character flaws. They’re survival strategies your nervous system picked up to protect you. But you don’t have to live like this forever. If this hit home, my 14-day nervous system reset was made for you. Comment INFO and I’ll send you the details 🤍

It’s aint easy ya’ll 🫣🤣 The good news? These strategies aren’t fixed—they’re adaptive patterns our system once created to protect us. “Disorganized” attachment for example —it’s not something bad to be fixed, it’s a wise, sometimes messy, yet courageous response to early environments that were unpredictable, chaotic, or not attuned enough to our needs. We learned that love could hurt—that closeness might bring confusion, overwhelm, or even pain. So we developed protective patterns: overreaching, clinging, detaching, collapsing, avoiding, pushing away… sometimes all at once. It’s like a cosmic dance of “come close—but not too close.” New science, bolstered by neuroplasticity and insights from polyvagal theory, confirms that our nervous system is ready to rewire when given safe, compassionate experiences. As Stephen Porges reminds us, “When the nervous system feels safe, the social engagement system is activated, and our capacity to connect deepens.” Me go from a state of protection to one of connection with ourselves, our environment, and relationships aka the parasympathetic ventral state of connection (and rest, play, pleasure, digestion), that as mammals were wired for. With new somatic experiences and relationships that start to feel safe enough—be it with a partner, coach, therapist, animal, nature, or even the universe—we can gently shed old patterns and peel away our armor. By befriending the parts of Self that protect us and giving voice to the younger parts we once hid awsy to stay safe, we start to feel safer in our own skin. Our body, nervous system, and subconscious are built for self-regulation and healing. Healing attachment strategies isn’t about “fixing” ourselves—it’s coming home to our wholeness, to who we truly are, and letting the body do what it naturally knows: move toward completion, regulation, connection, and yes—occasionally laugh at the absurdity of our own brain + nervous system’s antics. You are not broken. You are the medicine. You are the healing you’ve been waiting for. DM me to book a free 1:1 somatic coaching session. Together we can repattern, rewire, and rewrite the story your nervous system may still be holding 💖

FYI: Your body learned one survival strategy: don’t rock the boat… When a child learns that staying safe means staying quiet, agreeable, or invisible, the body shifts into chronic survival mode. Not because of one big traumatic moment, but because emotional safety depended on constant self-monitoring. So you became strategic. You learned when to speak and when to stay quiet. You learned how much truth was “too much,” which parts of you were acceptable, and which ones caused problems. You didn’t lie to be deceptive so you lied to avoid fallout. To avoid tension, punishment, disappointment, or long explanations that left you feeling small. Honesty didn’t feel brave. It felt dangerous. So you learned to manage yourself instead of trusting the space around you. That’s where the loneliness begins. When you edit yourself long enough, people only meet the version of you that feels safe to show. You can be surrounded by others and still feel separate 😕 like you’re performing connection instead of experiencing it. Over time, that separation turns into unworthiness: If I were enough, I wouldn’t have to hide this much. FYI : Anxiety isn’t random. Your nervous system learned that mistakes mattered, that being watched, corrected, or judged was normal. So now your mind stays busy overthinking , replaying conversations, anticipating reactions, trying to get it right. AND Perfectionism isn’t ambition. It’s simply protection. Boundaries feel hard because peace always came before you. Saying no feels harmful. Rest feels earned, not allowed. At this point: You’re just exhausted from surviving. Phoenix exists for this exact moment to help your nervous system step out of constant self-monitoring and into safety. So that you can step out of survival and finally start living ❤️‍🩹🐦‍🔥 DM PHOENIX if you would like to join #survivalmode #mentalhealth #trauma #childhoodtrauma #ptsd

I know you know where this is going…. Do you live a rich sensory life? To what degree do humans suffer from zoochosis? After all, we domesticated ourselves and more or less imposed a captive living environment. If this captive environment does not meet our “species-specific needs”, or is too stressful or frustrating, the theory of zoochosis suggests that we will see “a deterioration of phsyical and mental health”. I’m no doctor, but wow does that resonate with me. So what are our “species-specific needs” when it comes to our environment, and how can we include more of them? Basically they are the ancestral habits I go on and on about. ☀️At a minimum, we evolved in natural light. That means sunlight in the mornning and day and firelight or  no light by evening. ❄️We evolved to be exposed to natural ambient  temperatures. 👟We evolved to move all day. Little bursts here and there, cardio and strength. Manually getting places, making things, catching and gathering food. 💕We evolved in social settings, but not the forced kind: the kind you relied on and felt valued by. 🌱And finally, we evolved in environments that offered constant passive stimulation in a non-threatening way. The texture of the ground below our feet. The earth in our hands. The sounds of birds, the smells of nature, the frequent switching between myopic and hyperopic landscapes, the intense flavors of wild foods and functional plants. Maybe you get all of this in your daily life already🤷🏼‍♀️ It seems pretty achievable given the time and energy but actually implementing them can feel like a full time job. If creating a more “species-specific” environment for youself is important to you, maybe start small. I have some ideas in my free PDF (linked in bio). If you have some strategies that have worked for you- please share!! Many hypermobile humans get called “sensitive” but I don’t believe that to be true at all. Most 🦓’s I know can handle a LOT more than most people even realize, and if other people lived even a day with all of the symptoms hypermobile humans struggle with they’d probably be shocked Your connective tissue is made up of collagen and other structural proteins that create barriers throughout your body — in your gut, your blood vessels, even your nervous system. When those barriers are more permeable (aka leaky), more things can sneak through — histamines, inflammatory molecules, stress signals — which can lead to flare-ups, fatigue, pain, or that “crashed for three days after doing one thing” feeling. That’s why recovery isn’t optional for hypermobile humans. You can absolutely build resilience, but your system needs more time to restore that equilibrium after you’ve “absorbed” all the inputs (movement, stress, food, life). It’s not weakness. Needing more time to recover is your body doing it’s job. And sometimes when you do give it this extra grace, it really does lead to better healing and repair of our tissues and nervous system. I’m writing this today intellectually knowing this, but still manage to be surprised that when I do give my overachiever self a little more time and rest….it can actually work. Was this helpful? . Developing adaptability (soft assemblies) In ecological theory, promoting adaptive capacity relies on the emergence of a system's ability to functionally self-organize its degrees of freedom to achieve specific goals while taking into account constraints. We don't fix a single correct answer in memory, store it, and then recall it. We use our nervous system to form temporary, flexible connections by learning to use useful information (attention), to control the movement and context matrix (control laws), to set goals while taking into account constraints (intention ), and to learn to retrieve information in a way that takes into account individual constraints (calibration). #ecologicaldynamics #performance #complexsystems

Trauma doesn’t just leave memories it creates adaptations. And most people don’t realize how many of their current behaviors started as protection, not personality. Adaptations are the nervous system’s way of keeping you safe in a world that didn’t feel safe. They sound like: •”I don’t need anyone.” •”I’ll handle it myself.” •”I don’t ask for help.” •”Don’t get too close.” •”If I stay busy, I won’t feel.” •”If I keep everyone happy, I’ll be safe.” To others, these look like habits or attitudes. To a trauma survivor, they were solutions. Because when you grow up with chaos, neglect, emotional abandonment, or unpredictable caregiving, your brain adapts. It learns what reduces danger. It learns what prevents rejection. It learns how to survive. Hyper-independence protected you from disappointment. People-pleasing protected you from conflict. Shutting down protected you from overwhelm. Perfectionism protected you from criticism. Numbness protected you from pain that was too big to hold. You didn’t choose these. Your nervous system did. Healing isn’t about forcing yourself to “stop.” It’s about understanding where these adaptations came from, honoring the part of you they protected, and slowly teaching your body that it doesn’t have to live in survival anymore. Your adaptations were proof of strength. Your healing will be proof of safety. We will be accepting new clients shortly. No need for a lengthy caption for this. Everything in the gym isn’t about muscle growth. Because the brain loves to be more efficient. That’s why things can get easier over time. So, homework: -neural adaptation *what is it? *what are some examples? *what is the mechanism? Don’t use earlier stages with a new exercise to gauge if you’re building muscle. I will literally add another 20-30lbs to this next week. The real signs are when the neural adaptations are reduced. This is also part of the many reasons people have a misconception of muscle growth.
