MAPi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) to honor the mathematical constant pi, the number that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. HAIs π actually 2? Aka beware of visual proofs.
Draw a semicircle of radius 1. Its arc length is π.
Now replace it by 2 semicircles of radius 1/2. Both small semicircles have arc length π/2, so the total is still π.
Keep repeating this, using 2^n semicircles of radius 1/2^n. Every time, the total arc length stays π.
But as n tends to infinity, the curve becomes the straight diameter, and the diameter has length 2. So, did we just prove π = 2?
This is clearly not true so what goes wrong? The curves converge to the diameter, but limit of the length ≠ length of the limit. Why? Even when the bumps become tiny, the curve still keeps turning up and down. This means that the direction, or derivative, of the curve does not converge to the direction of the line. You'll always travel a longer distance along the bumpy curve.
