Do you grow a Wollemi pine, the dinosaur tree? This stand of Wollemi pines at the Blue Mountains Botanic garden are now turning 30 years. Discovered in a remote canyon in a National within the Blue Mountains of NSW,Australia. They are a species that have evolved with our changing climate, fossil records date them back to 200 million years old.. surviving an ice age and a drying climate. They were here before flowering plants, insects, mammals or birds.. it was a land mass of Gondwanna, a land of ancient pine… The surviving trees some as old as 2 thousand years old, they grow multi-branched from the base and can with stand fire from where they regenerate from epic comic buds and regrowth has been seen from the sides and tips. This was observed after the 2019 bushfires. Now in home gardens, parks from the coast to the mountains. Plants were sent world wide to the UK,USA,Asia,Europe. And yes I planted one of the first trees with David Nobil’s mother, the man who accidentally discovered the tree while canyoning. They like to grow in full sun with an easterly aspect away from western sun and winds.. Visit Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens.. it’s a beaut garden and so botanically rich.. @bluemountainsbg @botanicsydney @kewgardens @royalbotanicgardensvic @rbgedinburgh @laarboretum @#aucaria #wollemipine #plantatree #wollemianobilis

First Time Decandling Austrian Pine Transformation Begins! Working on shaping this Austrian pine into a garden tree with a Japanese zen garden vibe for the side yard. Here’s what I did 🕯️Decandling & Energy Balancing This season, I removed or trimmed most of the apex candles the area where the tree’s energy is strongest to slow vertical growth and redirect energy downward. In the middle section, I cut some candles in half to encourage even growth and promote back budding. I left the lower candles untouched to let the bottom branches extend and help develop that classic triangular silhouette you see in niwaki-style trees. 🌿 Lesson Learned This was my first time decandling, and I may have done it a little early. Ideally, I might’ve waited a week or two so the candles could harden slightly before cutting. Timing matters too early can delay or weaken bud development, too late and there’s not enough time left in the season for strong second flush growth. #Niwaki#JapaneseGarden#ZenGarden#GardenTransformation#gardenvibes#TreeShaping#pinetree#gardenart

Checking out the cones of the world’s largest species of pine, the sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana)! This species hold the records for being the tallest and most massive of all pines, up to 273 feet tall and growing to a diameter of 11.5 feet. It also has the longest cones of any conifer, growing to 2 feet long, though the coulter pine (Pinus coulteri) of Southern California has more massive cones. This species has its huge pine cones characteristically dangling from the very ends of its upper branches, making it utterly distinctive and identifiable from a long way away, so I thought I’d fly up and get a good look at them! You can see the previous year’s cones open and dry, their seeds all released last fall. You can also see the closed, shiny reddish cones that are still developing! Sugar pines, like many conifers, have winged seeds that helicopter down like maple seeds in the fall, being wind dispersed, but the big tasty seeds are so sought after by birds, bears and squirrels, that many are collected and eaten or stashed away before even taking flight! In this frenzied collection though, seeds are spread far and wide by wing or foot, then buried in the soil to be eaten later. But if the critter that stashed them dies or forgets where they are, then the seeds will sprout from the soil in spring! It is such a treat to get to hike around these remote and rugged Southern Cascade forests with these trees scattered in it. This plant is just so awe-inspiring! #pinuslambertiana #pinus #sugarpine #pine #pinecone #conifers #conifer #pinetree #pinecones #largestpinecone #botany #botanizing #floraofcalifornia #californianativeplants #calflora #bigtrees #treesofinstagram #treestagram #tree

Two of the Worlds Largest Pine Cones! The Coulter pine, Pinus coulteri, (photo right) is a native of the coastal mountains of Southern California and northern Baja California (Mexico) and produces one of the largest pine cones (by volume) of any pine. Coulter pine trees can reach heights of over 100 feet tall with cones weighing over 10 pounds giving this tree the nickname “widow-maker”. The sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, (photo left) has one of the longest cones of any conifer. Sugar pines bear pinecones that can grow to 22 inches long. Native to North America, sugar pine remain the tallest of all pine tree species, reaching a height of 250 feet or more. Known as the “King of Pines, this majestic evergreen can survive for up to 500 years. Other trees such as the bunya pines (Araucaria bidwillii) also produce giant cones, and as the name implies, they are conifers, but they are not true pines. Bunyas belong to an ancient plant family, the Araucariaceae. Cupressus Glauca / Italian Pencil Pine — a structural tree that delivers height, order and restraint. This narrow, upright conifer is ideal for formal planting where space is limited but vertical definition is needed. Often used to frame entries, line driveways or create rhythm in structured gardens, its natural columnar habit makes it easy to maintain with minimal pruning. Our current 70L stock stands between 2.2–2.4 metres tall, offering immediate presence in the landscape. Glauca suits both classical and contemporary designs. Its cool-toned foliage and strong vertical form create contrast, structure and a distinctly European feel — particularly when repeated or planted in rows. It’s also drought-tolerant, hardy, and long-lived — making it a practical option for residential and commercial planting alike. A reliable choice when clarity, scale and simplicity are the goal.

I’ve been going through videos of trees I worked on last season. I have been pruning this pine for over 4 years. It’s always fun to work on this Pom style, Pinus sylvestris @upwalldesign. I enjoy creating perfectly- imperfect clouds. I used a set of larger topiary shears from @niwaki.hq to snip back the growth on this specimen. I was able to cover a lot more foliage at a time by using the larger topiary shears. I have pruned and trimmed this same tree with a pair of hand secateurs and a small handset of topiary shears. Which is a lengthier process. I am definitely looking forward to pruning this season. 🌳✨🌳Tuesday is the perfect day for sharing your favorite topiary! Meet the introduced pine that’s changed our landscape. Pinus radiata, the Monterey pine, came here for timber and found a permanent place in our scenery. Its resin-rich wood burns hot and fast for fire-lighting, its needles create a soft forest floor, and its cones lock away seeds until fire opens them. Not native, but woven into the modern story of the Australian bush🌲 #Bushcraft #PlantKnowledge #PinusRadiata #BushSkills #AustralianBushcraft #WildKnowledge
