KAThe way she said she was “scared” of the shower! 🥺❤️ backstory ::: Ellie loves playing with her water table outside, but since the temperature has dropped, she can’t play in the water outside. So we decided that we would move the water table to the shower so she could still play with it! We carried it upstairs and got it all cleaned up, and then we brought Ellie. She was excited at first, but then she got scared because she didn’t want the shower water to drop on her head. She’s not the biggest fan of water on her head, so she just wanted the water in the table 😂 we played a while and then she started saying “all done” so we took her out. It was so fun, so we will have to do it again this winter! ❤️

FRI think it was our first winter in Alaska that I saw a rainbow ice igloo for the first time. A friend posted their ice igloo to Instagram. Their family had collected an exorbitant amount of milk cartons and proceeded to use these to freeze their bricks in. I thought this ice igloo was SO COOL, and instantly knew I wanted to make one.
However, at the time my oldest was not yet two, and I recognized that making an ice igloo with a toddler following me around was likely not going to go over well. So instead, I waited a few years. In 2022 that toddler was seven, I had a new toddler, and an infant. For some reason I decided that that was a good time to create our own ice igloo…
We struggled. Not only was I mostly limited to working on it during the times my infant was sleeping, I made many mistakes. The biggest one was that I used disposable bread pans for my brick molds. I have since come to the conclusion that plastic shoe boxes or disposable cake pans would have been much better choices. Not only did we have to make and freeze our bricks for the ice igloo, we also had to mix a slurry of snow and water to create a mortar for the bricks.
It took a LONG time to build this rainbow ice igloo. Not only did we receive 4+ feet of snow the week after we began work on the igloo, leading to a lot of time spend digging out the igloo, we also delt with temps down to -17 degrees Fahrenheit. At one point I was convinced I was doing irreversible damage to my fingers due to dipping them into the ice slurry at such low temps. (Thankfully they are fine.)
In short, it was a gigantic commitment, especially with an infant and a toddler who were really not able to help with the process.
I would like to make an ice igloo again. I learned a lot with the first one and I think a second one would take much less time. However, last year a friend offered to let me borrow her snow igloo making tool. I had intended to use it last winter to make our first snow igloo, but in the 2024-2025 winter season, Alaska experienced the lowest snow amount in (I believe) recorded history.
So, this is the year!

Kellen is OBSESSED with his brother. He asks to hold him allll day long. I can’t wait to watch their relationship grow as they get older. Kellen is my kid who will play outside in the mud and dirt all day long all by himself and I know I’m just a couple years Milo will be out there joining him

THIt is so hard being a mom right now. We want to give our children special moments, be present when they we play with them, and make them feel safe and loved.
Then the outside world comes in, with a constant borage of news that overwhelms, stresses, and distracts us. We want to stay informed, but our nervous system can’t take it and we struggle to be present with our kids.
That’s why we need community more than ever these days. Find support and make sure you are taking care of your nervous system because these issues are long term and if we want to fix it we need to stay engaged, but regulated.
