WONAVO-secretaris-generaal Mark Rutte stelde onomwonden dat Europa zich niet zonder de VS militair kan verdedigen. Hij zei letterlijk dat wie denkt dat Europa zonder Amerikaanse steun op eigen benen kan staan, “mag blijven dromen”.
Net daarom heb ik hem ook een vraag gesteld over de Berlijn Plus-akkoorden. Dat zijn de afspraken die ervoor zorgen dat Europa in bepaalde gevallen gebruik kan maken van NAVO-middelen, zoals commandostructuren en inlichtingen, als bepaalde leden zelf niet willen optreden.
Zijn antwoord ontweek de kwestie, en net dat toont dat we ons als Europa verder moeten ontwikkelen op militair vlak. En om echte slagkracht te tonen, kan dat enkel door diepgaander te gaan samenwerken binnen de EU. Binnen de NAVO als het kan, daarbuiten als het moet. En ja, toewerken naar een Europees leger hoort daar wat mij betreft bij.
