CHTeaching JAZZ to a pop singer?? Yes we’re doing it!! 😍🎤 I can’t believe I had the chance to work with the WONDERFUL @kayceewonderlanddd ❤️!! Jazz is an entirely UNIQUE vocal world where YOUR voice becomes an instrument, and the focus is on the freedom of improvisation.
One of the most important things to know about jazz is letting go! letting go of control, perfection, and even the melody sometimes! 🎶 With Kaycee, we worked on the fundamentals of jazz singing focusing on:
✅ Improvisation: Jazz lets you break free from structured melodies. Practice scatting or experimenting with notes outside the written melody to build your confidence. Trust your voice!
✅ Swinging: Jazz rhythm has relaxed feel to it. To master swing, think of each note as slightly behind the beat. Let your voice flow naturally with the rhythm, focusing on ease rather than precision.
✅ Blues Scale: The blues scale introduces flattened 3rd, 5th, and 7th notes, adding tension and emotion to your singing. These “blue notes” create a soulful sound that’s essential in jazz. Practice sliding into these notes to give your voice a little more character.
✅ Phrasing: Jazz singers have the freedom to play with timing! Stretch out certain phrases and pull back on others to help you create a unique groove.
