Light exposure! 💡 Newborn sleep feeling all over the place? Here’s a simple way to help their little body clock get on track! ⏳☀️ Newborns don’t yet know the difference between day and night, but light exposure can help! Here’s what to do: ✨ Let in natural light – For those early weeks daytime naps can be in bright rooms and try to get them outside in the morning light when you can. (If your baby struggles to sleep in the day it’s okay to have naps in a dim or dark room if it helps). 🎶 Make days lively, nights calm – Chat, play, sing to them (they love your voice), then keep nights quiet and low-stimulation. ⏰ Wake for feeds during the day – If it’s been more than 3 hours, wake them to feed. This can sometimes help shift their longest sleep stretch to night-time (where we all want it!). ☺️ Consider their awake time – As they grow, making sure they feed well (get support if you need it) and have balanced wake windows (that suit them!) will support longer, more settled nights. It’s NOT about filling them with milk to make them sleep - we want babies to be comfortable to sleep well. It won’t happen overnight (literally!), but these little tweaks make a BIG difference over time. Oh oh, and your laundry’s been done. & your bedsheets are clean & ready to sleep on. Oh and your partner just learned how to give your baby a tummy massage so witching hour might be more manageable later. Oh and there’s a little breathwork & meditation she downloaded to your phone so you can listen when you’re breastfeeding later. Oh and she left the baby wrap out to practice the baby wearing technique she showed you earlier. You feel well & supported ☺️ Postpartum care can be and often is, very subtle. But oh so PROFOUND. We don’t come in singing and dancing, but we leave knowing our work improved the quality of your postpartum in some capacity 🫶 I wish this for all mothers. Postnatal vitamins are marketed for the postpartum period, particularly for women who are breastfeeding. Nutrient needs significantly increase during pregnancy and research shows that many pregnant women are deficient in important nutrients even with a healthy diet, hence the need for prenatal vitamins. In the postpartum period, the need for some nutrients can be even higher than during pregnancy, which is why I generally recommend continuing to supplement for 3-6 months after delivery or as long as you are breastfeeding, whichever is longer. A lot of postnatal vitamins contain a bit more of certain nutrients that have been found in the research to increase in need when breastfeeding. For example choline, iodine, vitamin D, vitamin A, and vitamin B12. But - when I reviewed a lot of these, it just seemed that the prenatal vitamin in their line of products could have easily included those nutrients, and didn’t. So it kind of seemed like a marketing tactic to me - to get you to purchase the new vitamin. Also - to date, there is not evidence that taking a postnatal vitamin vs prenatal vitamin in the postpartum period leads to better outcomes. If you are already taking a high quality prenatal vitamin before and during pregnancy, and you have found one that works for you and that you like, by all means stick to that one in the postpartum period. As of now, I see no reason to change it up and choose a postnatal option. #pregnancy #postpartum #breastfeeding #prenatalvitamins
