STNO JUDGMENT if you’re doing these things. It’s easier said than done. But this is what we’ve been practicing at home and I emphasise practice!
1️⃣ Stop Giving Directions From Across the Room
Shouting “Put your shoes on!” from the kitchen while they are playing in the living room rarely works. Their focus is entirely on their current task.
🪄The Fix: Walk over to them. Get down on their eye level. Wait for eye contact before you speak.
2️⃣ Stop Framing Requests as Questions
Asking “Can you pick up your toys?” gives them the option to say “no.” It turns a firm boundary into a negotiation.
🪄The Fix: Use a calm, confident statement. “It is time to pick up the blocks.”
3️⃣ Stop Using “Don’t” and “No” First
When you say “Don’t run,” their brain often only hears the word “run.” This leads to more of the behavior you want to stop.
🪄The Fix: Focus on the action you want to see. Instead of “Don’t hit,” say “Use gentle hands.”
4️⃣Stop Repeating Yourself
Repeating a command five times teaches them that they don’t have to listen until the fifth time. It trains them to ignore your first four attempts.
🪄The Fix: Say it once. If they don’t move, walk over and gently help them start the task.
5️⃣ Stop Saying “No” Constantly
Constant “no” or “stop” creates a restrictive environment that invites rebellion.
🪄The Fix:** Tell them what they **can** do. Instead of “Don’t throw the block,” try “Blocks stay on the floor. You can throw this soft ball.”
