These are 10 common exception words children learn in Year 1. They’re often called “tricky words” because they can’t always be sounded out using normal phonics rules. A great way to practise at home is to: • Say the word • Cover it • Ask your child to write it • Check together Just a few minutes of practice can make a big difference to reading confidence. Comment “YEAR 1” and I’ll send you the full list + a simple activity you can try at home. 💚 #Year1 #PhonicsLearning #PrimaryParents #HomeworkHelp #Mums

With the Phonics Screening Check coming up in a couple of months, I wanted to share one of my favourite ways I get our kids to remember split digraphs. Split digraphs are one of the hardest things for our kids to spot and often lead to mis-reading of words, but this activity can help them recognise and remember them much quicker. If you want more help with your child's reading in the lead up to the Phonics Screening Check, check out the Phonics Check Club, which is packed full of activities, strategies and support to build your child's confidence and get them looking forward to their first formal assessment. 💬 COMMENT “ELR” & I’ll DM you the complete spelling rules PDF explanation for FREE 📩💛 🎁 6 Powerful Spelling Rules that prevent common mistakes instantly 💯 Clear Rules = Fewer Spelling Errors Most spelling mistakes don’t happen because children are careless. They happen because the spelling patterns were never taught clearly. Here are 6 essential rules every teacher & parent must know 👇 🔹 1️⃣ Long “I” at the end → Use Y, not I Cry, Fly, Try 🔹 2️⃣ V never stands alone at the end Add silent E Give, Have 🔹 3️⃣ J never ends a word after a short vowel Use DGE Bridge, Badge 🔹 4️⃣ U never ends alone Add E True, Rescue 🔹 5️⃣ OA never comes at the end Use OW Throw, Snow 🔹 6️⃣ AI never comes at the end Use AY Play, Day These rules reduce confusion, strengthen spelling patterns, and build confident writers. ✨ 📌 Save this for revision 📤 Share it with a teacher or parent 🔔 Follow @akshitajasolia03 for structured phonics strategies that actually work Hi, I’m Akshita Jasolia, India’s leading Phonics & Grammar Educator, helping women & teachers start their own teaching careers in phonics & build their credibility, grow their income, and start their own phonics classes❤️ #spellingrules #phonicsrules #teachphonics #earlyliteracy #phonicscoach [spelling rules for kids, phonics spelling patterns, ELR rule, long i spelling rule, dge spelling rule, v at end rule, ai vs ay rule, oa vs ow rule, phonics for teachers, structured spelling instruction, systematic phonics teaching, reading and spelling skills, early literacy strategies, phonics teacher training India, best phonics coach, best teacher training, top phonics educator Akshita Jasolia]

Bossy r enters … and the sound changes.. “Car” isn’t read like c-a-r. “Bird” doesn’t sound the way it looks. That’s not confusion. That’s Bossy R doing its job. 📚 5 Phonics Rules Children Are Rarely Taught in School 👀 If spelling feels “random” to a child… It’s usually because no one taught them the pattern behind it. 🤯 ✨ The Floss Rule In one-syllable words with a short vowel, we double f, l, s, z. fluff • bell • miss • buzz Not extra letters. Not guessing. A rule. ✨ Magic E Has More Than One Job Yes, it makes vowels long (cap → cape). But it also: • Protects soft c (face) • Protects soft g (huge) • Prevents words from ending in v (have, give, love) That silent “e” is working overtime. ✨ The EDGE Rule After a short vowel + /j/ sound at the end of a word, we write dge: badge • edge • bridge After a long vowel or consonant + /j/ sound, we write ge: huge • cage • orange Not guessing. A pattern. ✨ Short Vowel + TCH Rule After a short vowel, use tch for the /ch/ sound: catch • match • pitch After a long vowel or consonant, use just ch: beach • teach • lunch This single rule prevents SO many spelling mistakes. ✨ The Schwa Sound The relaxed “uh” sound in unstressed syllables: about • problem • banana Almost any vowel can say “uh.” This is why spelling feels confusing — unless it’s explained clearly. When children understand the logic behind words: ✨ Reading becomes smoother ✨ Spelling becomes predictable ✨ Confidence grows Stop teaching memorization. Start teaching structure. 💛 Save this. Share this. Teach this. 📖✨ #phonicsforkids #phonicsonlineclasses #teachingphonics #funwithphonics #phonicsteacher

A prefix can change or reverse the meaning of a word. For example: Root word ➡️ happy Prefix ➡️ un New word ➡️ unhappy The meaning is now the opposite. Using the pegs and lollipop sticks as above also demonstrates that not all prefixes go with all root words. Extension activity: be a prefix detective🕵️‍♀️ and look for words with a prefix in today’s reading book. Can your child identify the root words? #spelling #kidsactıvıtıes #learningenglish #learningfromhome #primaryeducation
