ENPast Continuous or Past Perfect Continuous?
- I was reading a book when the phone rang. - This is Past continuous. We use it here to show that an action ‘was reading’ was interrupted or even stopped by another action ‘the phone rang’, it doesn’t mean that we finished reading a book/an article. We may also use it to set the scene for another action.
- She had been reading a book before the phone rang. - This is Past Perfect Continuous. It is used to talk about actions, intentions or feelings over a period up to the time of a particular event in the past. We emphasise the DURATION of this activity.

SPThe present perfect tense (has/have + past participle (taken, eaten, played, etc)) is one of the building blocks of English. At the same time, it is not a common tense among the world’s languages and can be difficult to use.
I have found that for my students it is best to memorize certain patterns and use it then. In this video I talk about using “for” and “since” as indicators that you need to use the present perfect. Check it out!
