Looking for a simple pre-writing activity that actually helps your child hold a pencil and control their marks? This Play-Doh fine motor routine is perfect for building hand strength and finger control before handwriting. In this video, I show parents easy Play-Doh actions that strengthen the small muscles children need for writing, drawing, scissor skills and everyday independence. Try these moves together: press, push, poke, stretch, bend, smash and squeeze. These quick Play-Doh exercises support grip strength, coordination and control, making letter formation and early writing feel easier over time. Use this as a daily warm-up before phonics writing, name writing, tracing, or any mark making activity at home or in the early years classroom. Keep it short, playful and consistent, and you will see those hands getting stronger. If you want more early years support for handwriting, fine motor skills and school readiness, subscribe for practical parent-friendly ideas. Before kids learn to write, their hands must learn control ✍ Controlled scribbling is not about staying inside lines on day one. It’s about moving from freedom to structure—slowly and playfully 💛 Start with open colouring. Then introduce stencils. Next, use cut-outs. Add play-dough boundaries. Fill shapes with dough, grains, or pulses. Each step strengthens tiny muscles, improves focus, and prepares hands for writing—without pressure or frustration. This is how pre-writing skills are built the right way 🌈 Save this for your toddler learning routine ✨ #learningthroughplay #toddleractivities #prewritingskills #montessori #finemotorskills

My son is a reluctant writer, so I try to get creative to keep him motivated to keep trying and practicing. One thing I know from many years of teaching the littlest learners is that to help develop their fine motor skills, you actually have to start big not small. So, if your kid is getting frustrated with tracing little letters, try a writing game like this on big easel paper. I think I might try this one again, but sort different colored gems. How else could I get him practicing? Let me know all your creative ideas in the comments. Before little hands can hold a pencil, they need strength, control, and confidence. ✨ That’s where fine motor play comes in. Tracing with Q-tips is such an easy way to build fine motor skills, improve hand-eye coordination, and gently prepare kids for proper pencil grip — all without pressure. Play first. Learning follows. Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who are just beginning their writing journey. #finemotorskills #prewritingskills #preschoolactivity

Did you know that before a child can write the letters in their name, they need to be able to trace and independently write a series of 8 simple shapes and lines? 🤔 When our daughter started showing an interest in writing, I designed a series of pre-writing cards to help her practise those key shapes, lines and more. You can laminate these cards and have your little learner trace over the marks with a whiteboard marker. But if you’re looking to add a sensory element, try these ideas: - Trace into a salt tray - Trace onto paint in a bag - Write into shaving cream - Use a stick and write into kinetic sand - Write with chalk outside - Paint with water on an easel - Use paint sticks - Draw with a pen and place stickers over the top You can find out more about the pre-writing strokes to practise with your little learner AND grab a set of these pre-writing cards from the Back to School range by commenting WRITE down below 👇🏻

What’s this? Just children playing with air-dry clay… or so it looks. But this is exactly what helps children later when they’re learning to write lowercase letters. Lowercase writing isn’t just about knowing the alphabet. It requires strong hands, controlled finger movements, and the ability to guide a tool smoothly while changing direction on the page. As children squeeze, roll, pinch and shape clay, they’re building: • hand strength needed to control a pencil • finger isolation for proper grip • coordination for curved and directional strokes • control needed to keep marks on the page • focus and persistence for writing tasks These foundations come before letter formation. When they’re built through play first, writing becomes easier and far less frustrating later on. It might look like simple art. But this is groundwork for lowercase writing. Follow @valando_demetriou and @mini.ivy.art for more real insight into how creative experiences support school readiness. Save this for when you’re wondering how to help your child with writing, without jumping straight to worksheets. #handwritingreadiness #lowercaseletters #prewritingskills #finemotordevelopment #pencilgrip schoolreadiness earlychildhooddevelopment preschoollearning learningthroughplay kindergartenready kidsdevelopment childdevelopment adelaideparents earlylearning miniiivy

Fancy a freebie? 🎁 Comment ‘cards’ and we’ll DM you our pre-writing shape and pattern cards — perfect for helping your little one build fine motor skills through play! These cards are a fun way to practice early mark-making skills — from wavy lines and zig-zags to loops and shapes that support early writing development. ✍️ Salt trays are a brilliant way to explore mark making — an essential first step in the journey to becoming a writer. Little ones can use their fingers to trace the patterns and build confidence through sensory play. They’re super easy to prepare with minimal resources. To colour salt, pour some into a clear plastic bag, add a few drops of food colouring and scrunch the bag until the salt is covered. Pour it out onto a tray and allow to dry for a short while. We added a bit of bio glitter and some snowflakes to give this one a wintery feel but this is entirely optional. As well as a salt tray, these cards are designed for mark making in other materials too, like sand, mud or shaving foam. You could also laminate them and use them with a dry wipe pen for tracing. #earlylearning #finemotorskills #preschoolactivities #InspireMyPlay #earlyyears

Fine motor development is the foundation of writing. Before children can form letters, they need to pinch, pull, squeeze, rip, twist and control the tiny muscles in their hands. That’s why fine motor matters. Try these 3 simple activities at home: • Bead rescue in playdough • Tweezer colour matching • Rip, scrunch + flick paper balls Save this for later and follow for practical strategies that build real foundations for reading and writing 🦘 #schoolreadiness #finemotoractivity #phonicsforkids #finemotorskills #earlyeducation

Looking for a quick, low-prep activity to strengthen little hands before writing? Try this squeeze & pop fine motor game. Simply poke a small hole in the middle of a bag (or piping bag), add small items, and let your child use both hands together to squeeze the pieces out and pop them into a pot. This playful activity supports: • Fine motor strength (finger and hand muscles) • Bilateral coordination (using two hands together) • Grip and control for early handwriting and pencil skills • Hand–eye coordination and concentration Perfect for EYFS, preschool, nursery, Reception, and home learning. Use it as a warm-up before letter formation, mark making, or any writing practice.
