5 tips to stop procrastinating: ⬇️ 📖 ⏰ Schedule studying into a daily routine. Make a specific time each day that you will study. This will over time create a habit of studying. Even if you procrastinate, if you schedule this time into your day, you will at least get something done. 💪 Motivate yourself in unique ways. For example, watch a movie that inspires you to study (ie Legally Blonde), make a study playlist that excites you, prep yourself a delish study snack, go somewhere new to study. Find ways to make study appealing. 📝 Write a very detailed to-do list. This may be overwhelming at first, but trust me: by breaking up your tasks into smaller detailed tasks, it will be easier to get things done. You won’t be afraid of starting your paper if your goal is just writing the introduction. 📚 Do not work at your bed or the couch, or in loud areas. This makes getting distracted easy. I recommend working at the same space all the time, somewhere cool, quiet, and clean, to get your mind in the focus zone. 📱 Get off Instagram. If you are reading this right now: close the app, and start studying. At the end of the day it is up to you. Procrastination is like a highly normalized addiction. Are you guilty of procrastinating? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to know. I had a period of procrastination a few years ago. I was burned out from too many years of studying (and taking no breaks). Through reading scientific papers, studying and experimenting with different aspects of my life, I found what worked for me to overcome these issues: Firstly, focus on the fundamentals. Boring but they work. Quality sleep (7-9 hours), regular physical exercise, a balanced diet, exposure to natural light, love yourself (and find people who love you) etc…. Then fix these specific issues: ISSUE #1: Your brain is overstimulated. You spend your days multitasking, scrolling or being on-the-move. You don’t sufficiently live in the moment. SOLUTION #1: Do activities that will slow you down. Spend 5-10 mins in boredom each evening. Practice journaling or meditation. No phone or other stimulation are allowed as this time is designed for reflection, consolidation and gratitude. ISSUE #2: Through easy dopamine triggers (e.g. endless social media, refined sugars, constant pleasure seeking etc..) you have imbalanced your brain’s pleasure system. SOLUTION #2: Delay instant gratification by scheduling it for later. Limit dopamine triggers that require minimal effort. Do more difficult things more often: exercise, meditate, read and cook your meals. ISSUE #3: You find it challenging to stick to your long-term goals. Your brain prefers immediate rewards over delayed ones and this contributes to your procrastination. SOLUTION 3: Break your goal down into small pieces. Solving many small things means more regular dopamine release helping you stay on track + keep you motivated. You enter a winner streak and rewire your brain for more productivity.
