Prune this espaliered Meyer Lemon tree with me. 🍋 🌳 Every spring, I prune the test garden’s citrus trees. Pruning citrus is not a requirement like with apples or peaches, but we do like to clean them up because it not only makes the trees look nicer, it also helps reduce pests and diseases as well as promotes new growth and more fruit. Here are the steps I take when I’m pruning a citrus tree. Always use clean tools. ✂️ First, I remove the ripe fruit. Next, I prune away the “4 D’s”: Damaged, dead, diseased, and disoriented branches, which grow downward, cross other branches or grow towards the center of the tree. (I’ve heard some call it deranged instead of disoriented but it means the same thing) Lastly, I prune for shape and fullness. I trim the branches at the bud node where I would like it to sprout new growth. I look to create a balanced shape. The bud node is the bump between the leaf and the stem. Cut about 1/4” above that spot and new shoots will grow there. You will probably only remove a few branches. Do not prune more than a third of the tree in a season. #pruningtips #citrustrees #growingtips #Zone8 #zone9 #zone10 #meyerlemontree #fourwindsgrowers

How to prune a Lemon Tree 🍋✂️ Tutorial for a healthy & productive tree 🌿 No matter the size of your lemon tree, regular pruning is essential to keep it healthy, productive, and well balanced. A well-pruned citrus tree allows better sunlight penetration, improved airflow, and stronger fruit development. Here are the main branches you should remove: 🍋First, remove all dead wood. Dead branches drain energy, attract pests, and can spread disease. Removing them improves overall tree health. 🍋Second, remove water suckers. These are vigorous green shoots that grow inward or vertically. They consume nutrients and water but usually do not produce fruit. If left unchecked, they can grow large and reduce productivity. 🍋Third, remove crossing branches inside the canopy. When branches rub against each other, they create wounds that invite disease. They also reduce airflow and block sunlight inside the tree. 🍋Fourth, cut back excessively tall branches. Opening up the tree improves air circulation and allows sunlight to reach the inner canopy, which helps fruit ripen evenly and reduces fungal risk. Proper lemon tree pruning supports stronger growth, better structure, and more abundant harvests. If you are wondering what to do with all your lemons, you will find plenty of ideas on my page 😉 Green Love to you

Our lemon (and citrus) trees are working hard this time of year, pulling a huge amount of nutrients from the soil to grow the lemons/limes/ oranges/ mandarins -that we’ll enjoy all winter. 🍋 So it’s the perfect time to give them a little extra love. I like to feed mine with comfrey leaves and a sprinkle of Epsom salt to top up the minerals. If you don’t have comfrey growing, a good seaweed fertiliser (or seaweed) works beautifully too.

🍊Set up your citrus for a bountiful year by giving them some TLC in late winter. February is the perfect time to give a little attention to your citrus trees anf they will thank you with a fruitful future! ✂️ Encourages Strong Spring Growth – Late-winter pruning removes dead or crowded branches, allowing sunlight and air circulation to reach new growth just in time for the season’s first push. 🌱 Boosts Nutrient Absorption – Post-rain, citrus trees are primed to take in nutrients. Applying a balanced organic citrus fertilizer now supports flowering and fruit development. 🦟 Keeps Pests & Disease in Check – Moist conditions can invite fungal issues and pests like aphids and scale. A gentle horticultural oil spray helps prevent infestations before they start. 🌞 Prepares for a Long Fruiting Season – With the right care now, your citrus will stay healthy, resilient, and ready to produce an abundance of fruit in your garden. How to prune citrus trees Do this in late winter, in the uk I will do this in Late February or March Lemons can quickly grow very large and in pots, it is best to control your tree’s growth with very regular pruning. Remove any dead, diseased or dying branches and then reshape the plant. Citrus plants can be pruned back by up to two-thirds which will encourage bushy growth, also cut back any crossing branches as these can chafe and create an access point for insects and disease.
This will result in your lemon tree keeping a nice, tight shape. #citrustree #lemontree #limetree #orangetree #pruning #garden #gardening

If your tree isn’t thriving, check to see if it has “suckers” coming out of the root stock. This tree was planted in ground a few years ago, but has always been on the struggle bus for our client. In an attempt to rehabilitate it, we dug it up and potted it in premium citrus soil. Also, we noticed this particular lime tree had four thick sucker branches coming out of the rootstock. For those new rootstock, most commercial trees are grafted onto a robust rootstock. Rootstock typically refers the bottom trunk portion with establish roots that serve as a jumpstart base for a grafted variety. Rootstocks are typically more disease resistant and are vigorous growers, however the fruit is not as desirable hence grafting on a tasty variety. Every tree has a fixed amount of energy it can produce, so if there are undesirable branches, it is consuming energy that would otherwise go to flower/fruiting and branches that you do want to keep. So, here’s your sign to go check your tree at the graft union, and cut any branches that are growing from BELOW or AT the graft union. If you’re new around here, welcome! Citrus Tree Care Tips 🍊 Now that we’ve got our first little orange tree, I’ve been spending some time researching how to care for her. This was what I found: ❄️ Move inside for winter: when the weather drops below 5°C/41°F throughout the night, citrus plants should be brought inside during those cooler nights. If this isn’t possible, cover in fleece throughout the colder months 🌞 5-6 hours of direct sunlight: citrus plants need a sunny spot in the garden. Most only reach 4-5ft tall in a pot, make sure to move the pot accordingly. If planting into the ground, they may grow bigger but can’t be moved so make sure to find the spot with the most sunlight! 💦 Adjust watering regime according to seasons: during colder months allow the soil to dry on the surface before watering. However through summer water freely (using rainwater if possible!) ✂️ Pruning: in early spring cut back the tallest branches to avoid overcrowding. In summer pinch the tips of the most vigorous growth. Plants that’s are 3-5ft tall can carry no more than 20 fruits, so cut back the fruits where necessary 🌱 Feeding: citrus plants need regular feeding throughout spring & summer using a citrus feed containing high potassium levels 🪴Re-pot annually: repot early spring every year to reimburse the plants with new essential nutrients. Use a high quality citrus feed; I used @westland.horticulture Or make your own mix using soil, grit, vermiculite & high quality compost Hope this helps any fellow newbies! 🥰 Orange tree in the @lovewilko sale 🍊

Part 6B: The Imposters — Suckers and Water Sprouts In part 6, I talked about pruning your citrus trees. I suggested a less is more approach. The exception is suckers and water sprouts. When you see them, you should get rid of them, no matter the time of year! Here’s how to identify them: The Sucker 🍋 Where it grows: Below the graft union (the “bump” or scar near the base of the trunk). 🍋 The Problem: These grow from the rootstock, not your fruiting tree. If you let them grow, they will eventually take over and you’ll end up with sour, thorny, or inedible fruit. 🍋 Action: Snip these off flush to the trunk the second you see them! The Water Sprout 🍋 Where it grows: Usually straight up from the main scaffold branches or the upper trunk. 🍋 The Problem: These are “vegetative” growth. They grow incredibly fast and have huge leaves, but they rarely produce fruit. They just shade out the productive parts of your tree and steal nutrients. 🍋 Identification: Look for long, whip-like branches that grow vertically rather than out at an angle. They often have extra-long thorns. 🍋 Action: Prune these back to the base of the branch to keep the tree’s energy focused on fruiting wood. Which do you find most often on your trees?
