SADIY Rain Collection Tank! ☔️
I found this IBC tote on Facebook marketplace for just $100, and had an idea to collect rain water with it! 💦(Disclaimer: this tote only had one previous owner, who also used it for rainwater. If you buy second hand, make sure it wasn’t used for chemicals or anything prior).
In total, we spent under $400 for this whole project. Which I don’t think is too bad, because this is a 330 gallon tote, and the 50 gallon rain barrels can go for around $100 each! Over 6x the amount of water for the same price.
What the $400 went towards:
1. $100 water tank
2. $200 Leaf / Debris filter on the gutter
3. Under $100 for the tote cover, hoses, connections, and bottom spigot
Things I’d do differently when installing:
1. Raise the tank up and add cinder blocks under so we can easily fill buckets from the bottom spout (we’re going back and doing this before it fills up with the next rain).
2. Take the whole gutter off and cut vs trying to cut while installed. Much easier lol
3. Buy the cover from the start: this has been up for a few days, and we already have leaves getting caught in the metal stand. I grabbed this $15 cover you see at the end of the video to help with that. We’ll be adding a fence around both anyways, so this is a great temporary fix!
I cant wait to watch this full up all spring, and have free water to use all summer. We plan to use for watering the garden, filling kids water tables, for future chickens, washing cars, etc. We also have a stand alone water filter inside that we can filter the water through for drinking, if we’re ever in an emergency.
