It sets the tone globally while dodging responsibility. "It’s not just indifference. It’s an active, and deadly, cavalier attitude towards the lives of others: an example other nations follow."
Under Donald Trump, that turned into open climate denial, rolling back environmental safeguards, and pushing extraction at all costs. That ideology doesn’t stay contained. It spreads through politics and economic pressure, normalising the idea that protected land is just untapped profit.
You can see that logic creeping into New Zealand with prospecting permits nownissued in UNESCO World Heritage areas. These places are meant to be protected, not opened up when it’s convenient. Once you start treating them as negotiable, protection becomes meaningless.
This is what that ideology leads to. Anti science, pro extraction, short term gain over long term survival. Mining protected land is not development, it’s the same playbook, just in a different place.
In the middle of the ongoing climate crisis and sixth mass extinction these choices are indefensible and grossly reckless.
