James Loewen, in his book #SundownTowns, claims that during the Great Migration, Black Americans settled in various small towns in the midwest as they fled (not just large cities like Chicago, New York, or Minneapolis in this case), but they were run out due to White terrorism and violence, and the establishment of those towns as Sundown Towns (be out before the sun goes down or risk violence or death).
In this case, #WinonaMN isn’t listed as one, but its demographics, aligned with its politics (Trump flags everywhere too) and recent claims of racism (ESPECIALLY at their schools) are consistent with one. More to come on this… 🤔
