🚁 4-Blade Rotor Drone Simulated in OpenFOAM! Excited to share that we’ve successfully completed a CFD simulation of a 4-blade rotor drone using OpenFOAM! 🧊 The mesh was generated using snappyHexMesh, capturing the complex drone geometry with multi-rotor regions. AMI (Arbitrary Mesh Interface) was utilized to accurately model the interaction of multiple rotating rotors. 🔄 While the current mesh is relatively coarse — limiting wake resolution — the simulation still provides valuable insight into rotor interaction and flow structure. Results were visualized in ParaView, showing the Q-criterion iso-surfaces colored by velocity to reveal vortex dynamics. 🌪️ This is a great step toward high-fidelity drone aerodynamics modeling. Next steps will involve refining the mesh to better capture wake structures and improving turbulence modeling for enhanced accuracy. #CFD #OpenFOAM #snappyHexMesh #Paraview #DroneSimulation

Our racing division will be competing in the Collegiate Drone Racing Championship, hosted in Tulsa, OK, with 8 pilots racing. Our second competition is the Student Unmanned Aerial Systems competition where our team has built a fully autonomous drone that is tasked with search and rescue missions! Lastly, our team will be returning for the first time in 7 years to the International Aerial Robotic Competition to compete in Mission 10, a humanitarian mission to safely guide someone across a minefield while pushing the limits of compact computing.
