THRedd Kross brothers Jeff & Steven McDonald are coming to The Punk Rock Museum on Jan 7th along with filmmaker Andrew Reich who directed the new documentary Born Innocent, which tells the story of arguably the most underrated band of their generation.
In 1979, two school kids all hopped-up on Punk Rock started their own group in their hometown of Hawthorne, Los Angeles (birthplace of the Beach Boys) and soon found themselves opening shows for notorious scene pioneers Black Flag. Jeff McDonald was 15, his brother Steven only 11. But that didn’t stop their group from becoming one of the most remarkable, enduring and unique outfits Punk Rock ever belched up. This is no amateur night, Redd Kross has seen it all. And if you come to The Punk Rock Museum on January 7th, you’ll get to hear all about it!
Born Innocent will be screening at The Beverly Theater in Las Vegas on Jan 6. The following day, come join Redd Kross and director Andrew Reich for a magical ride through The Punk Rock Museum with these legends. Did you know all their early shows were with Black Flag? It’s true.
“We played all of our first shows with Black Flag,” Steven McDonald tells The Daily Breeze, “The first one was an eighth-grade graduation party, and we got Black Flag the gig.”

Janelane is the music project of Los Angeles-born singer and songwriter, Sophie Negrini. Her contrasting blend of pop hooks and shimmery guitars with profound, melancholic lyrics is romantic, nostalgic, and incredibly addictive. Despite being raised by two opera-singing parents, it was rock music that Negrini found solace in at a young age. Negrini credits her older sister (and occasional music partner), Gina, for drilling the entire Beatles discography into her brain well before the 4th grade. At age 12, Negrini taught herself to play guitar, and began to pen her own pop melodies, occasionally performing songs about her crushes acoustically in front of her classmates. It was at age 15, however, during a particularly depressive and painful time, that she became more reclusive, spending every waking hour singing and writing songs in her bedroom. Diving into the discographies of everything from Big Star, to Bob Dylan, to Dear Nora, to Redd Kross, Negrini wrote song after song, and began recording them on her dad’s laptop. At 17 years old, Negrini performed for the first time under the name “Janelane’, in a local bookstore with her acoustic guitar. A year later, she solidified her first electric line-up of Janelane, regularly performing at venues in Los Angeles, such as The Smell and The Echo. Peaches and Cream, Janelane’s first official EP, was released via Danger Collective Records in 2015.
In late 2015, Negrini was recruited as a touring lead guitarist in punk rock band, Peach Kelli Pop. After 3 years of touring across Europe, Japan, and America, Negrini shifted her focus to Janelane completely, and began recording a plethora of new music. In April 2020, she released the moody, black and white music video for the ballad, “14 Days”. In October 2020, she released the fuzzy, colorful, PBS-esque video for tearjerker, “Flowers from Athens”.

MYNext time you walk down Santa Monic Pier remember it is a part of the history of L.A. punk rock as both Sin 34 and Redd Kross played a show here November 21, 1982. Some of my memories of punk shows have faded into little snippets but this show I remember like it was yesterday. Fun in the winter sun on the pier with these two cool bands and a punk instigated kiwi fight to boot with Redd Kross playing in the crossfire. To me this show was one of the best I’d been to! You can see footage of this show in The Slog Movie by Dave Markey and Jordan Schwartz but they ran out of film before the kiwi fight and I documented the whole thing with my camera. FUWhat halfway decent soundtrack tricked you into paying to see the movie, only to discover the movie was hot trash? This was the one that got me. Cool soundtrack (Mudhoney, Redd Kross, Swervedriver, Mexico 70), but it was an insult to comedy, the film industry, and common sense. Even George Clinton couldn’t save it.
