Things I Wish I Knew Before Studying Public Health… 1. Public Health ≠ Pre-Med I thought public health was just another path to med school. It is actually policy, economics, sociology, law, urban planning, and politics all rolled into one. You are studying society, not just diseases. 2. Healthcare Is a Business Nobody prepares you for how much money drives health outcomes. Insurance models, hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies. Understanding incentives is just as important as understanding biology. 3. You Learn Systems, Not Just Science Public health trains you to think in systems: housing, education, transportation, food access, violence, environment. You stop asking “Why didn’t they choose better?” and start asking “Why was this the only choice?” 4. The Field Is Political (Even When People Deny It) Health policy, funding, and research priorities are shaped by politics. You cannot separate public health from power, ideology, and policy debates. 5. The Career Paths Are Broader Than You Think You can go into policy, global health, consulting, tech, startups, NGOs, government, research, diplomacy. Public health is everywhere decisions affect people’s lives. 6. Burnout Is Real, Even in School Learning about inequity, preventable deaths, and systemic failures can be emotionally heavy. Compassion fatigue is real. Boundaries and rest are part of being effective. 7. Skills Matter More Than Your GPA Data analysis, policy writing, research methods, communication, organizing. These get you jobs. A degree opens doors, but skills keep them open. 8. You Will Start Seeing Inequality Everywhere Neighborhoods, grocery stores, policing, schools, transit. You realize health is shaped long before anyone enters a hospital. It changes how you see society. #publichealth #healthjustice #collegelife

Yup. It’s only you. It might sound a little harsh, but if you fall apart, no one else will do your research for you. I’m not saying a corporate job is easier. But in most corporate environments, if you’re absent for some reason, there’s usually someone who can cover for you. However, in academia, for better or worse, you’re the only one who knows your work—your research methods, your theme, the previous studies, your data, your conference presentations, your journal reviews, all of it. That’s why I make sure to take proper rest, so I can recover and keep functioning. This is just a gentle reminder: you’re the only one who can truly take care of yourself. So please be kind to yourself ❤️ #lifeintokyo #tokyolife #japanlife #tokyojapan #coffeebreak #studymotivation #phdlife #phdjourney #quoteoftheday #studying #workfromhome #academiclife #社会人の勉強 #大人の勉強 #studystudystudy #researchpaper

3 ways you can structure your PhD literature review: (1) Chronological Structure This structure organises the literature review based on the historical development of research in the field, starting from the earliest studies and progressing to the most recent. By following a chronological order, readers can trace the evolution of ideas, theories, and methodologies over time, providing valuable context for understanding current research trends and gaps. (2) Thematic Structure Thematic structuring categorises the literature review into different themes or topics based on common threads or concepts present in the literature. This approach allows for a comprehensive exploration of specific areas of interest, facilitating in-depth analysis and comparison across studies while highlighting key findings and debates within each theme. (3) Methodological Structure A methodological structure organises the literature review based on the research methods or approaches employed by various studies. This framework enables readers to evaluate the strengths and limitations of different research methodologies, fostering a deeper understanding of how research questions are addressed and knowledge is generated within the field. #literaturereview #phdstudent #thesiswriting #phdwriting

1. BA, BSc, or Hons—your degree name doesn’t define your career. 👉 What you do alongside matters more: internships, research, projects. 2. Just doing a Bachelor’s won’t make you a psychologist. 👉 You’ll need a Master’s + license for most careers. 3. You won’t study just therapy. 👉 There’s stats, research methods, and even biology. 4. You won’t “read minds”, but you’ll read a lot of books. 👉 Theory-heavy, but so worth it. 5. People will constantly ask you, “So are you a therapist now?” 👉 Get ready with a one-liner to educate them. HOW TO WRITE A SYNOPSIS FOR YOUR PHD THESIS A PhD thesis synopsis serves as a concise overview of your research proposal. It’s a critical document that outlines your research direction and sets the foundation for your dissertation. Save this post to revisit when drafting your own synopsis. Here’s how to write a clear and effective synopsis: 1. Title The title should be clear and descriptive, summarizing the key focus of your research. Ensure it is specific and conveys the research problem without being overly complex. 2. Introduction In this section, provide background information on your research topic. Explain the problem your research aims to address and why it’s significant. 3. Research Objectives or Hypotheses Clearly state the research objectives or hypotheses. What do you intend to explore or prove through your research? These should be precise and aligned with your research questions. 4. Literature Review Briefly discuss the key studies and theories relevant to your research. Show how your work fits into the current body of knowledge and identify the gaps or issues that your research will address. 5. Research Methodology Describe the research methods you will use, including the approach. Justify why these methods are appropriate for your study, and outline how you will collect and analyze data. 6. Timeline Provide a detailed timeline of your research activities including key milestones and deadlines. This shows that your research is well-planned within the expected timeframe. 7. References Include a list of key references that demonstrate the academic foundations of your work. I personally designed an ultimate tool which can help you design your synopsis, find the Research gap, and even help you write an actual research paper effortlessly.
