Why you should avoid short rest times 🔻 When I started training, I used to rest 30s between my sets. My progress was slow, and my gains were minimal. When I changed my rest times both my strength and recovery improved, but there are other benefits people don’t realise: 1️⃣ ATTRIBUTE TRAINING: This refers to what you are training for. If you train calisthenics, you should be training for strength, which means you need lots of rest between your sets so you can perform at your best every single set. You should be resting for 3+ minutes after most sets. For hypertrophy, 60-120s tends to be best, and only if your goal is endurance should you be resting less than 60s. 2️⃣ CUES: Studies have shown that parts of your brain involved in the execution of a movement are active before it is performed. This highlights the importance of correctly visualising how to do the movement before executing it in order to perform and coordinate it correctly. With short rest, process is rushed or neglected, which will negatively impact your sets. 3️⃣ RECOVERY: Strength movements are mostly anaerobic. This means that you are not able to perform them for a sustained period of time. If you don’t rest sufficiently between your sets, fatiguing byproducts will accumulate, and ATP (fuel for muscles) won’t be sufficiently resynthesised, reducing your performance. 4️⃣ MUSCLE GROWTH: Supercompensation/anabolism (your muscles get back stronger) does not occur during your sets, it only occurs at rest. Insufficient rest times/days will mean your muscles don’t rebuild, just continue to break down (atrophy). This causes you to lose strength, progress & injury. I used to train upwards of 12x per week. I fractured my back doing clean & press to failure, not my only injury from my training style. It’s not worth it. Your body needs rest, you’re not doing it any favours by not taking it.
