Made famous by the legendary Louie Simmons, the reverse hyperextension is an underrated movement for strengthening the low back, glutes, and hamstrings. Reverse hypers also work well as joint prep and prehab for the lower parts of your spine. Louie originally used this movement to help heal disc injuries from decades of lifting. Around 1.5 years ago, I hurt my low back while doing light hang cleans. While loading up for rep 1 of set 3, my low back seized and shut down. It was a scary feeling—as if I instantly lost all strength and stability. Likely contributors to my injury were dehydration and workout length. I couldn’t hinge my hips for days. I needed assistance to squat down or stand up. I was forced to restrict my movements for weeks. Luckily with enough time and rehab, I gradually healed and got back to lifting and high-impact parkour. 1 of the keys to my back recovery was the reverse hyper. Unfortunately, as a nomad, I rarely have access to a reverse hyper machine. Instead, I find ways to do reverse hypers on novel setups wherever I go. Sometimes the obstacles are uncomfortable or suboptimal but they’re better than nothing! Hardly anything makes my back feel better than consistent reverse hypers so it’s worth looking out for any excuse to do a set 😊 If possible, progressively overload this movement via a reverse hyper machine, ankle weights, a partner to resist your legs, or a resistance band. If not, be creative with other ways to make them harder or varied. The most common issue with these is the safety catch locking (SOOO annoying)! Use glute bands on each safety catch to hold the hooks back & voila! Two Smith machine exercises I love for direct glute activation and tension.🔥 I start with Reverse Hypers to wake up the posterior chain and load the glutes through hip extension without stressing the lower back. When done correctly, driving through the heels and controlling the swing really lights up the glutes and hamstrings. Then I move to Smith Machine Frog Thrusts. This position shortens the glutes and allows you to focus purely on the contraction. Holding the bar keeps everything stable so you can concentrate on the glute squeeze and controlled tempo. No Reverse Hyper? Try This👇 The Reverse Hyper is one of the BEST machines for building a strong low back. But the problem is, most people still don’t have access to one. And if you train at home… chances are you definitely don’t. But the benefits of this movement are so good that it’s absolutely worth finding a way to recreate it. And that’s where this variation comes in. This Swiss Ball Reverse Hyper is the closest setup I’ve found that replicates the movement and delivers very similar benefits. And the best part is, you only need a bench and a Swiss ball, so it’s super accessible. Just grab a bench and a firm Swiss ball (I prefer a 55cm), then roll onto it until your feet hang straight down. Grip the bench firmly, lock the ball in with your arms, and squeeze your glutes, hamstrings, and low back to lift your legs into extension. And that’s it… you’re doing reverse hypers! Now don’t get me wrong… the real machine is still the real deal. The platform fully supports you, the swing arm gives you better range, and it’s built for adding load, something that’s hard to replicate with a DIY setup. While you’ll never truly be able to replicate the load of the real machine, increasing your reps and volume is the next best thing. But all in all, if your gym doesn’t have a Reverse Hyper, this is definitely the closest alternative I’ve ever found.

The sleds are not the same, nor are the athletes. (my opinion) Sled times are down minuets across the board. Apparently they are going to change the surface now, which will be interesting. However, because the sled is so much easier to move in general, running has become more important. Aerobic capacity has started to factor in more as the amount of maximal power needed has decreased. Single leg strength, and muscular endurance are still incredibly important to train, but my priority has shifted farther towards continuing to build aerobic capacity, and lactic acid clearance/tolerance. I don’t need as many Type 2X muscle fibers anymore, I would rather slowly change them to Type 2 A, and even develop my type 1’s further. So I’m experimenting with some training that basically fatigues the more explosive fibers with short bursts, then straight into what should be the upper levels of my aerobic capacity. The goal is to create more “hybrid fibers” (yes that’s a name for them) that are a blend of some explosive power, but also more fatigue resistant. I don’t do quite as much strength training as I did when I first started Hyrox. I’m curious if you do? #hyrox #hybridtraining #hybridathlete #howtohybrid
