This sewing technique is called reverse applique and uses a patch of fabric on the inside rather than out! I have a full tutorial on ‘sewing reverse appliqué’ and a free heart template! I’ve used this technique to make a cushion cover previously but it can be used in so many ways 🪡

I’m like a broken record with the start of my captions here, but I found these shorts at the goodwill outlet bins, lol, and wanted to bring them home and save them! They’re a fun outdoorsy brand, Kavu, but had a big ol’ rip down one leg. I struggled getting started with these - I wasn’t inspired by any of the patches I tried out and none of the shapes I thought about stitching over top felt right with how tall and narrow they had to be. I’ve done reverse applique on here before, but never this particular method that hides raw edges. The biggest struggle I had was figuring out what to stamp and peek through! I used another denim scrap and eventually did a loose repeat pattern - the circles are made from a pencil eraser and the rectangle is from a clothespin. I had a lot of fun making this design, I just love stamping on fabric! This method isn’t fantastic for a high-wear spot since it leaves just one layer in the middle and really has multiple layers around the seam, but it works perfectly for a spot like this that must have gotten stuck on something random and probably won’t get much wear again. My rectangle isn’t perfect perfect - and you could add understitching if you wanted super precision, and I was too lazy to bust out my applique foot for prettier topstitching, but as always, if you’re a perfectionist, you can definitely follow this method and get a perfect mend if you’re more particular than me :) What do you think of this method? Another day, another thrifted branding cover-up, I’ll pass on my kids being billboards. Nike fleece is really nice quality and I love this jungle green, so I covered it up with an outgrown/stretched out shark tshirt and two other scrap tshirts for accent color! Nothing super creative on this one, as you can see in the video I had plans to make a different shape behind but couldn’t balance the cover-up shape with the available space to my liking. I am happy with how it turned out though, what do you think? Would you try this tutorial? A few tips I didn’t get into the video: - heat n bond just makes it adhere better, I consider it a must for tiny fiddly shapes but a convenience for others. When layering like this, I like the featherlight option but it still gets thicker so wouldn’t be ideal on a thin shirt. -if you get heat n bond too hot, the glue will melt off completely and not work (this happened at the very bottom of the orange layer on the shark, as you can see it lifting more) -knit won’t fray so you can use a straight stitch around the edge but the edges will curl up a touch after washing. Zig zag works too and avoids the curling. Use a stretch stitch if on a tighter fitting shirt. -if you’re new here, I have lots of examples! You can add patches, embroidery, reverse applique, graphic shapes, words, the sky is the limit! -yes, I have a stash of shirts to work with! This was a very simple project that spent months in my queue and only a few hours in my lap actually working on it. Here’s the secret to reverse applique - You can use light colored background prints without worrying about dark fabric showing through - just add interfacing! I use HeatnBond Lightweight Fusible Interfacing as an extra layer between the background fabric and the fusible adhesive so I don’t have shadowing - check it out! This works perfectly in my Strippy Improv Halloween blocks - get the pattern in my web shop and sew some blocks before Halloween!
