THRigidity:-
It refers to increased neuronal activity throughout the Range of Motion and is not velocity dependent. Rigidity is present in both the Agonist and antagonist group of Muscles. Rigidity is usually a result of Extra pyramidal lesion and is associated with basal ganglia disease such as Parkinson's Disease.
Lead pipe Rigidity:-
There will be constant/ sustained resistance felt during Passive movement throughout the ROM. It's the hypertonic State of the muscle where both the Agonist and antagonist Muscles contract simultaneously.
Cog wheel Rigidity:-
In cogwheel Rigidity, the Resistance is intermittent when passive movements are performed. The intermittent resistance occurs due to the presence of resting tremors that are associated with the Rigidity. It appears First in the proximal muscles and then spreads to the distal muscles
Decorticate Rigidity:-
This type of Rigidity occurs when there is a lesion in one or both of the corticospinal tracts at the level of diencephalon. The arms are adducted and flexed with wrist and fingers flexed closer to the chest. whereas the legs are extended, internally rotated and feet are plantar flexed in position.
Decerebrate Rigidity:-
Decerebrate Rigidity is the result of damage to the upper brain stem. Here arms are adducted and extended with forearm Pronates and fingers flexed. The legs are extended with plantar flexion of the feet. In short there will be sustained contraction of extensor muscle of all four limbs.
Factors contributing to Rigidity include:-
Inability of the patient to completely relax the muscle
Increased stretch reflex
Increased stiffness due to altered viscoelastic properties of muscle
Abnormal coactivation of agonist and antagonist Muscles
Decerebrate and decorticate Rigidity are abnormal posture associated with coma
