GIRing sizing is far less exact than people think, and the reason is rarely talked about. It actually only just clicked for us too!
..so most of the time, it’s not you getting it wrong. It’s a flawed conversion system
Most people rely on conversion charts between US, AU/UK, and other sizing systems, assuming they are exact. In reality, conversions are only rough guides and more importantly, they all differ depending on where you look. There is no universal conversion!
👉🏻Different jewellers use different mandrels and different charts, all with slight variations when converting the actual ring size in millimetres (which is always the most accurate method) into lettered or numbered systems like size 6, size M, or size 55. Take a quick look online! You’ll notice that you’re getting multiple different sizing conversions that don’t match up perfectly.
What people don’t realise is that rings are not physically made using conversion charts. They are made to internal measurements in millimetres.
That measurement is the most precise reference point, and it’s what jewellers actually use when sizing and producing a ring. So while conversions are convenient, they are not the true measurement the ring is based on and can be why youre getting the wrong ring size.
This is also why you may have been sized at one jewellery store, then had a ring made elsewhere, only for it to fit differently than expected. Even small discrepancies in how millimetres are converted into lettered or numbered sizing can noticeably affect the final fit.
If you want to avoid this, the most reliable approach is to reference millimetres wherever possible. Measuring the internal diameter in millimetres, or using a physical ring sizer, removes a lot of the guesswork and aligns far more closely with how the ring will actually be made. It’s a quiet industry nuance that we’ve actually never heard anyone talk about, but it explains why so many people are told one size, order another, and end up feeling confused when the fit isn’t quite right.
