Strong currents are not to be messed with. If you're not sure what a rip tide is ... I highly recommend that you stay far away from the shoreline. I was standing on one with my 4 & 2 year old children & all three of us got swept in. Thankfully, we were rescued by strong surfers. It was at Sunset Beach on the north shore of Oahu. Let’s chat rip currents! 🟣 Waves bring the sea water into shore, and rips are the natural process of the water heading back out. ⚠️ 75% of people CAN’T spot a rip. So key signs to look for: 🌊 Gaps between the waves or fewer breaking waves. 🌊 Seaweed, sand and sediment pulling out to sea. 🌊 A rippled surface surrounded by smooth water. 👋 If you get caught in a rip: 1️⃣ Stay calm, call for help, raise your arm or wave it. 2️⃣ Float on your back, and let the rip take you out to sea. Most don’t go too far out, and often circle back around allowing you to catch the waves back to shore again. 3️⃣ Stronger swimmers can try and swim parallel to the shore to exit the rip. ❌ Don’t try and swim against the rip. It is too strong and you will tire fast. Conserve your energy and float. 🛟 It’s always best to swim at patrolled beaches between the flags, so if you get into any trouble, you can more easily attract the attention of a life guard. 🟡 There is so much more to know about rips and beach safety but I can’t fit it all in this reel. For more info, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr Rip’s ‘Science of the Surf’. I will pop his link in my bio. 🙏 I urge you to get as clued up on beach safety as you can, teach your kids how to swim, and know how to respond in the event of a drowning.
