Walking through Grand Wash in Capitol Reef National Park feels calm, but this canyon was carved violently. Flash floods rushed through here for thousands of years, stripping away rock layer by layer. In the desert, water doesn’t visit often, but when it does, it reshapes everything. #GrandWash #CapitolReef #UtahHikes #SlotCanyon #DesertGeology

For decades, Lake Powell kept its secrets submerged beneath hundreds of feet of Colorado River water. But when the lake level dropped, something curious happened. Canyons re-emerged. Forgotten boat ramps resurfaced. Rusted relics, long-lost marinas, and sandstone cathedrals that hadn’t seen daylight since the 1960s suddenly stepped back into the sun like they’d been waitin’ patiently for their encore. See, when Bureau of Reclamation dammed the Colorado and built Glen Canyon Dam, entire landscapes disappeared beneath the rising reservoir. Now? The lake is lower than it’s been in decades — and the ghosts of old Glen Canyon are peeking back out. History, geology, and a reminder that the desert always keeps the receipts.

Save the Colorado River!! Public comment ends today, March 2nd!! The Colorado River is experiencing the longest drought in recorded history. It is currently 20% lower than average with Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the country’s largest reservoirs, depleted by over 70%. The Grand Canyon is sandwiched between Lake Powell and Lake Mead and depends on water being released through the Glen Canyon Dam. Today is the last day for public comment on the new rules for the Colorado River drafted by the Bureau of Reclamation. Make your voice heard and urge for the rules to protect the Grand Canyon by keeping water in Lake Powell and Leak Mead at certain levels. Link to comment in my bio. 📍Colorado River, Grand Canyon National Park New here? Howdy! I’m Smokey the Girl and I sleep around. All around the country that is! Flash floods in the Grand Canyon can form in minutes. What looks like a calm side canyon can suddenly turn into a wall of water, mud, and debris. These floods are often triggered by storms miles away. Rain may fall upstream where you cannot see it, but the water funnels through narrow canyon corridors and becomes extremely powerful. In places like Tatahatso Beach, debris flows can carry rocks, logs, gear, and even rafts within seconds. For hikers and river runners, flash floods are one of the most dangerous natural hazards in desert canyon systems. Here are a few critical prevention tips every hiker should know. 1. Always check the weather forecast for the entire watershed, not just where you are standing. A storm 20 miles away can still send a flood downstream. 2. Avoid camping or resting in dry washes, narrow canyon bottoms, or sandy channels. These areas are natural flood pathways. 3. Pay attention to warning signs such as sudden muddy water, rising water levels, distant roaring sounds, or floating debris. 4. If you see water rising, move immediately to higher ground. Do not try to outrun a flood downstream. 5. During monsoon season in the Southwest, be extra cautious. Flash floods are far more common between July and September. The desert can look peaceful, but canyon landscapes amplify water power very quickly. Respect the terrain. Read the weather. Stay alert. Because every hiker should remember one thing. You are made to climb this mountain.
