Let’s keep our ecosystem safe for our little friends by avoiding stacking stones. The rocks stacked by people are not just random stones, but are actually part of the natural environment where small animals like insects, crabs, tiny geckos and other species use the crevices and spaces between them as shelter and hiding places. Some experts argue that extensive rock stacking can even lead to extinction of certain species! 😱 #StoneStacking #RockStacking #TravelTip #Aruba #EcoTourism

I’ve seen some internet fights about this… Rock Stacking vs Leave No Trace ⚠️These are official rock Cairns for navigation ⚠️ This wide open field has no trees and no distinguished path. Only animal trail weaved all through sagebrush, making it super easy to get confused and taken off the trail. So, our trail crew built these cairns as official trail markers to navigate this small section of trail in the high desert. Rock art, on the other hand, can confuse people potentially putting them at risk of getting lost. It can also speed up erosion and destroy animal homes, especially salamanders and little river critters. What are your thoughts on rock stacking? . . . #trailcrew #rockstacking #rockcairn #hikingtrails

If you can’t recreate responsibly, stay out of the water 🙂‍↕️ In September, a hellbender salamander (a proposed endangered species!) was found crushed in Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a result of reckless human activity. The Park stated that hellbenders can lay up to 300 eggs beneath rocks at a time - meaning rock stackers can destroy entire generations instantly. Moving and stacking rocks can also alter the directions of waterflow, causing significant erosion and harming water quality which also affects aquatic species. Just don’t do it - it’s as simple as that. #rockstacking #appalachianmountains #outdoors

I usually post this video once a year as a reminder (for those who care) to stop building rock statues or rock crains and if you see them knock them down! -Moving rocks and stacking them can disturb the natural habitat of tiny creatures (amphibians, reptiles, insects, crustaceans, and fish) -Building rock stacks can contribute to erosion and destabilization of the shoreline or wilderness area. -Many people visit rocky shorelines or wilderness areas to experience their natural beauty and tranquillity. Building rock stacks can alter the area’s natural beauty. • • • • #rock #stackingrocks #rockstacking #nature #outdoors

STOP STACKING ROCKS I got unbelievably lucky and spotted one in the wild. Sliding out from beneath a flat river rock, it looked like something straight out of another era. Moments like that are rare for a reason. Creatures like this only survive in cold, clean, undisturbed water, and even then they stay hidden. Hellbenders are one of the most remarkable animals in southern Appalachian streams. These giant salamanders can grow over two feet long and have existed since the time of the dinosaurs. They spend their entire lives beneath large, flat rocks where fast, oxygen rich water flows over their skin, allowing them to breathe. Those rocks are not random shelter. They are essential habitat. A single rock can be a hellbender’s home for decades, providing protection from predators, floods, and strong currents, as well as a place to lay and guard eggs. Rock stacking and rearranging streambeds might seem harmless, but it causes real damage. When rocks are lifted or shifted, animals hiding underneath can be crushed or exposed. The spaces hellbenders need for shelter collapse. Eggs can be destroyed. Even small changes to the streambed can alter water flow, reduce oxygen levels, and increase sediment, making the habitat unsuitable for species that rely on clean, cold water. The impact does not stop with hellbenders. Many aquatic insects, fish, and amphibians depend on stable rocks for food, shelter, and reproduction. When rocks are moved, entire micro ecosystems are disrupted. What looks like a simple stack of stones can unravel years of natural balance. If you care about healthy rivers and the life they support, be anti rock stacking. Leave rocks exactly where you find them. Do not rearrange the streambed. Do not build towers. The most responsible way to enjoy these places is to leave no trace and let the river stay wild. Protecting ancient river species starts with doing nothing at all.

Rock stacking might look harmless-even artistic-but it disrupts delicate ecosystems in big way

Rock stackers are still high on my biting list in 2026 Rock stacking might look harmless—even artistic—but it disrupts delicate ecosystems in big ways. Those stones aren’t just lying around waiting to be rearranged. They’re part of a living system. Under those rocks? Microhabitats. Moist, shaded spots where insects, salamanders, frogs, and tiny aquatic life depend on stable conditions to survive. Move the rocks, and you expose them to sun, wind, predators—and death. Beyond the biological harm, rock stacks create visual pollution. In wild places, they disrupt the natural landscape and the feeling of solitude and discovery that many seek. It’s a form of unintentional vandalism, leaving behind a human footprint in places that should feel untouched. In some areas, especially desert or alpine environments, rock stacking can mislead hikers by mimicking official trail cairns, putting people at serious risk of getting lost. It’s not just “leave no trace.” It’s leave it better—or at the very least, leave it exactly as you found it. So next time you’re tempted to stack a few stones for fun or photos, think about the unseen impact. Snap a pic of nature as it is. That’s the real art. 🌿 Respect the wild. ♻️ Leave No Trace Principle #4: Leave what you find. 📣 Help spread the word—share this and tag someone who needs to see it.
