The older man pushing the swing is her husband, unknowingly sending his wife into her lover’s gaze.
In the background, the cherub statues seem to smile, and one puts a finger to his lips, suggesting that this scene is a secret. The contrast of light and shadow symbolizes the hidden nature of desire and the moral hypocrisy of society.
