Why you overeat⬇️ Physical restriction of food. When you skip meals, drastically cut calories or go on a diet, your body may enter starvation mode, making it more likely to overeat when food becomes available. This is known as the “famine-feast cycle” also known as the “restrict-binge cycle”. Mental restriction of food. When you deprive yourself of certain foods, the desire to eat them intensifies. The longer you restrict, the stronger the urge to overeat these foods when you finally allow yourself access. Emotional eating. Overeating often becomes a coping mechanism for managing stress, past trauma, or negative emotions. If you feel empty or unfulfilled in life, you might turn to food to fill the void or comfort yourself. Boredom. Eating can sometimes be a response to boredom, especially if you’re unsure of what else to do with your free time. If food becomes your go-to activity, it’s easy to overeat simply out of habit. Mindless eating. Eating while distracted—whether watching TV, scrolling on your phone, or working on your computer—can lead to overeating because it distracts you from recognizing your body’s fullness cues. Hormones play a key role in regulating hunger and fullness. Imbalances in hormones like leptin and ghrelin can lead to increased cravings and overeating. Nutrient deficiencies. If your diet lacks essential nutrients, such as protein, fiber, healthy fats, or carbohydrates, your body may signal hunger and cravings to try to fill those nutritional gaps. Sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep can disrupt the balance of hunger hormones, increasing levels of ghrelin (which stimulates appetite) and decreasing leptin (which signals fullness), leading to overeating. Addictive nature of certain foods.
