Artist Mark Rothko sought to make paintings that would bring people to tears. He painted to explore the depths of himself and the human condition. For him, art was a profound form of communication, and art making was a moral act.
Born in Latvia in 1903, Rothko immigrated to the United States in 1913. Like his peers, he found his direction and place in New York and began to study at Parsons School of Design under painter Arshile Gorky in 1925.
His time at Parsons piqued his interest in European Surrealism which influenced the biomorphic forms that populate his paintings from the early 1940s. These forms would ultimately give way to his Color Field painting style and exploration of the limitless possibilities of layering variously sized and colored rectangles onto fields of color.

VIThey’re not the same.
Modern art = 1860s–1960s
(Monet, Picasso, Rothko, the whole evolution of abstraction)
Contemporary art = 1970s–today
(the stuff people usually get mad at installations, bananas taped to walls, random performance pieces)
So when people cuss at “modern art,” they’re usually actually mad at contemporary art… and blaming the wrong era.
Rothko ends up getting hate for things he never even did.
People judge quickly because they want instant meaning, instant realism, instant skill on the surface. But Rothko’s art works from the inside out.
It’s not meant to be understood in 2 seconds ,it’s meant to be felt. #art #artist #modernart #contemporaryart #rothko

MARothko wanted to raise painting to the level of poignancy of music and poetry and he succeeded beyond words.
To say that this show is spectacular is an understatement. 115 paintings on loan from museums and private collections that have never been shown together before in such a comprehensive way.

SFEven art needs a little pick-me-up sometimes! Watch as our conservator, Jennifer Hickey, gives Mark Rothko’s “No. 14” (1960) a retouch.
#FunFact “No. 14” has only left our galleries twice since entering our collection in 1997, once in 2013 and more recently for an exhibition at @foundationlv. Upon the Rothko’s return, our conservation team jumped on this rare opportunity to bring it to their studio for maintenance. The last time it was conserved this comprehensively was in 1998!
This visitor favorite will be back in our galleries on Thursday, June 6. Check back soon for a behind-the-scenes look at how this painting traveled from Paris back to our museum.
