To really clean your saddle, you must wash first to remove all the dirt! Keep in mind: Mold can hide behind conchos. I like to take them off if I can for a better clean. Fenders stay on most of the time, but I pull them in and out as I’m washing and rinsing and later oiling to cover all the parts of the stirrup leathers. This is sped up 4x and is just short clips. Most areas needed washed 2-4 times over several hours. Be really careful what kind of brushes you use and how much pressure! You can scrub too hard and scrub the finish right off smooth or tooled leather. Soft vegetable or nail brushes ONLY on roughout leather. You can’t go wrong with just a soft toothbrush! I always try to start with wetting the leather from the bottom up before I apply any soap. I never want soap to run down onto dry leather. It can dry and cause permanent streaks. Rinse ASAP. Rinse many, many time until the water runs clear. Yes, I am washing in the sun. It was barely 40 degrees this day and freezing (hence the rain gear!). Saddles always, always dry in the shop in front of a fan with no heat. Be careful of moisture and mold! This one dried for 4 days in my shop. Everyone knows saddle fit is important for the comfort of your horse, but did you know it can impact soundess? 🤔 A well-fitted saddle allows your horse to freely move whilst supporting horse and rider. Here are 2 scenarios that would impact a horses way of going: A saddle that is too narrow might pinch the withers and restrict the shoulders, causing the horse to overreach from behind as the front legs take a smaller step. Alternatively, a saddle that is overly flat can bridge on the horse's back, leading the horse to not engage their core and therefore not move their hocks through and underneath.
