Incredible octopus encounter off of Malapascua in the Philippines. This was by far the most confident octopus I believe I’ve ever encountered in broad daylight. . . Although Malapascua is a famous dive site for thresher sharks, I was shocked at how much incredible biodiversity the DIVE site offered as well. . . For almost 5 minutes this octopus and I had an incredible interaction. Most of the time, octopus are hiding during the day, usually hidden in a crack or crevice and want nothing to do with divers. . . This octopus did not get the memo, absolutely incredible watching them change colors, and textures to match the environment. It also had an entourage of fish along with it. . . When you realize you’re on camera and casually turn to your good side 😉📸⁠ ⁠ This midwater octopus, Japetella diaphana, looks more like a deep-sea squid than an octopus. Unlike other octopuses, Japetella lives exclusively in the midwater at depths of a few hundred to over 1,000 meters (about 500 to 3,000 feet). ⁠ ⁠ This charming cephalopod is found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world’s oceans. Its skin is covered with chromatophores, which are pigment-containing and light-reflecting cells that allow it to change color.

Scientists found only 2 of these alive in an entire Mediterranean study. I’ve done extensive research and only ever found one other photo of a Tuberculate / Pelagic octopus in a salp, and was unable to find ANY video in any research archive, or any format online so to my knowledge this is the only video that exists of this animal. The fact I found one living inside another animal at the Channel Islands is so insane. These octopus are Pelagic and spend almost all their time in deep ocean which is why almost every sample found has been taken from the stomach of a fish. So seeing one alive is also just nuts. Credit is not all mine my buddy Jordan Manning @jays_visions was also with me on this dive! Then of course I met my little seal friend Barnaby and he (or she I’m not sure) decided to give me a personal tour. What a dive. Thanks again for 30k I can’t wait to share what I find next.
