💖Trust me when I say this: I LOVED my hair. I sobbed on my floor when I learned I needed chemo & my biggest fear was losing my hair. I would have done almost anything to save it. So, why didn’t I try cold capping ? Cold capping, or scalp cooling, is a technique used to try to reduce hair loss during chemo. You wear a special cap that is cooled to a very low temp & is worn before, during, & after infusions. It works by constricting the blood vessels in the scalp, reducing the amount of chemo that reach the hair follicles, helping to preserve the hair. While cold capping can be effective for some, the type & dosage of the chemo cocktail can make a big difference in it’s effectiveness & results vary widely from person-to-person. ⚖️I weighed several factors, but ultimately my decision came down to this: my oncologist said he had not seen success. Still, I did my own research & learned that I had a 7% chance of retaining <50% of my hair. I saw pictures of the hair loss other women experienced while cold capping & I knew that seeing myself with bald patches, losing nearly all of my hair, & agonizing from week-to-week wondering how much more I’d lose and retain would be more traumatic & stressful for me than taking matters into my own hands. ✅Also, I WANTED the chemo to go to my scalp !? 💇🏼‍♀️Many women who’ve had breast cancer say they feel like buzzing their hair felt like they could control something in a situation that is otherwise out of our control. This is definitely the way I felt when I had shave my head. I have never once regretted my decision even though hair loss was traumatic and growing it back has been a very long, not fun process. It’s a very individual choice. I am glad that cold capping is available to women and that many of us have a choice. 🥶 Did you cold cap ? Have You Heard About Cold Capping? ❄️✨ As many of you know, I’m currently undergoing chemotherapy, but what you may not know is that I’m also using cold capping (or scalp cooling) to help preserve my hair during treatment. Cold capping works by cooling the scalp, which reduces blood flow to the hair follicles. This can minimize hair loss by limiting the amount of chemo that reaches the follicles. While results vary for everyone, and it’s not guaranteed, it can be a game-changer for those looking to hold on to as much of their hair as possible during chemo treatments. This process isn’t easy—it requires dedication, patience, and a lot of frozen caps—but for me, it’s worth the effort. Even if there is a lot of hair loss, scalp cooling can help prevent permanent alopecia caused by chemotherapy. I want to share this experience because if you or someone you love is going through chemo, there are options! Hair loss doesn’t have to be a given. If you’re curious about my journey or want to learn more, feel free to reach out. I’ll be sharing updates along the way! Sending love to all my fellow breasties 🎀 out there. When I found out I needed chemo, my hair was the first thing that came to mind. I’ve had patients tell me that they thought it was so vain to worry about hair loss and in some ways I agreed. After all, we were dealing with cancer. But when I was faced with losing my own hair, I realized it wasn’t about vanity at all but rather total loss of control. The feature that everyone always noticed about me was my hair. It was voluminous, long and black with natural brown highlights and had never been dyed. I once had a patient tell me that I had “amazing, adult film star” hair…lol. Learning that I needed chemo was shocking enough, but knowing that I was going to lose my look was another reminder of how cruel this diagnosis could be. There would also be no way to hide my diagnosis with my hair loss. I was thrilled to learn that my infusion center would be getting the Paxman Scalp Cooling system just in time for my first cycle. While some hair loss is always expected, I thought for sure I would be able to fly through treatment with no one knowing the wiser. Unfortunately my hair started falling out in clumps 17 days after my first cycle. The loss was more than the expected shedding, it was full on molting. Despite this, I continued with cold capping to preserve what I could. I retained a very thin layer of hair on the peripheral and very top of my scalp, but lost everything else. In retrospect, there were several things that I should have done differently on my 1st cycle for better results. 1. Cooling cap too big - sized a medium, but should have been small. I had enough hair for 5 people and this contributed to incorrect sizing. 2. My hair should have been cut & thinned PRIOR to the first treatment. 3. Hair should be parted down the middle, not combed it straight back, to allow maximum contact with scalp. 4. My scalp was not cold at all during the first treatment. I should have spoke up and readjusted. Despite my results, scalp cooling is a great option. I’ve had many patients with good success. I made this reel to help others have a better outcome than I did. FYI video was taken at time of 3rd cycle. Follow my journey on instagram @breast_cancer_360

15 months since finishing chemo, 14 months of hair growth and my hair is finally getting to a length I’m happy with. I had so many messages lastnight about my hair, it really has felt like it’s taken ages to get to this point and growing your hair out isn’t easy. There’s so many awkward lengths, I went through a phase of always wearing a cap, then I’ve slicked it back with gel for the past couple of months. I’ve not put any heat on it until I discovered it’s now long enough to blow dry. I’ve had two trims and will probably have another one in a few months once the front gets abit longer and then hopefully it will be a proper bob. It does take patience and it’s not where I want it to be yet but it won’t be long 🥰 #chemohairloss #scalpcooling #breastcancerawareness #chemohairgrowth #breastcancerunder40
