Bringing the ocean to the lab 🌊 At Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Scripps Ocean-Atmosphere Research Simulator (SOARS) recreates one of Earth’s most complex systems right on campus. This 120-foot wave channel and wind tunnel lets researchers simulate everything from tropical seas to polar conditions using real Pacific Ocean water. Why it matters: the boundary between ocean and atmosphere drives weather, climate, air quality and human health. With SOARS, scientists can study these interactions in controlled conditions, test new instruments, and collaborate across disciplines to better understand our changing planet. From wave dynamics to sea spray aerosols, SOARS is helping unlock the science behind Earth’s most powerful systems while training the next generation to protect them. While the two aren’t mutually exclusive, being a marine biologist generally does not mean you’ll be in the ocean every day. In fact, it probably means you’ll be in the ocean for less than 10% of your time working. The other 90% of the time will be spent writing, in meetings, analyzing data, or in the lab. Do you want to be a scientist and research a marine system? OR, do you want to spend your days in the sea? Generally, the jobs that have the most ocean time are NOT marine biology jobs. These jobs are things like working as a scuba instructor or snorkel guide for an eco-tour company, underwater photographers, aquaculturists, commercial divers, or captains. ‘Marine Biology’ is often used as a blanket term for any ocean related job, but it is actually much more specific than that. I think it’s important to ask yourself this question to decide what path is best for you! The vast majority of my underwater time is spent working as a scuba instructor, not as a marine biologist! It is the reason I do both jobs, so I can still have plenty of ocean time while I do the science 🧜🏼‍♀️ Hawaiian spinner dolphins cruised by on our dive yesterday with @liquidcosmosdivers 🐬

What I mean👇 Now of course humans don’t ruin absolutely everything, but in the case of the sperm wake that was killed by someone’s fishing nets, it’s a yes. Approx 100 000 marine animals we killed each year from human impacts (such as plastic, boats, etc) and an extra 2.8 TRILLION are killed with the intention of being eaten. Absolutely insane how high those numbers are, right? But not to worry, that are lots of things we as individuals can do to help our precious ocean ecosystems: 🪸 Reduce single use plastic usage 🪸 Eat less seafood (more direct impact) 🪸 Pick up trash when you see it! Deadline to save the deep ❌ Here’s what you need to know about deep-sea mining… ⛏ Mining could be allowed to start as early as July 2023. That’s right. Next month. 🤯 This new practice of mineral extraction – which could become the largest mining operation in history – threatens to significantly disturb the delicate environment of the deep sea, with devastating consequences for life on earth. It is estimated that between 500,000 and 10 million species coexist in the deep sea, a diversity on par with that of tropical rainforests. In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean, where mining is proposed to take place, it is estimated that up to 70–90% of the species collected are new to science. Scientists have discovered corals estimated to be over 4,000 years old and sponges up to 11,000 years old - the oldest living animals ever observed on earth. All scientific evidence gathered so far indicates that deep sea mining will be devastating for the deep-sea ecosystem, with immense risks for the health of the ocean as a whole and the benefits it can provide for people. The UK Government must live up to its claim of being a world leader in marine conservation and join other countries in standing up against deep-sea mining. Scientists on a return journey to Beagle Marine Park in central Bass Strait have made an extraordinary discovery in the deep mesophotic reefs of the Great Southern Reef. Thousands of sleepy Port Jackson sharks were found blanketing the seafloor, captured by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) deployed from the SARDI research vessel MRV Ngerin. This two-week survey, led by the University of Tasmania’s IMAS, revisits the area to observe changes since their first survey six years ago. Dr Jacquomo Monk, the voyage leader, said that finding the sharks again was like finding a needle in a haystack. “It was very exciting when we managed to traverse over a rise in the reef to get a glimpse of the sharks snoozing 65-metres below the vessel in almost the same location as they were six years ago,” Dr Monk said. In an interesting twist, researchers noted that the gathering appeared to be exclusively female. This raises intriguing questions about their behaviour and why this location is so significant for them. Could they be preparing for their journey north to lay eggs? The mystery deepens, but one thing is clear—this area is vital for their lifecycle. This incredible find showcases the importance of continued research and exploration in our marine parks. Footage by NESP-IMAS This research voyage on the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) research vessel, the MRV Ngerin, was led by the University of Tasmania Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. It was supported by the Australian Government under the National Environmental Science Program and a grant of sea time onboard the Southern Coastal Research Vessel Fleet, funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy.
