67: Some children don’t talk — and people assume there’s nothing there. This shows up often in autistic children, children with apraxia of speech, language processing differences, ADHD, selective mutism, motor speech disorders, and gestalt language learners. They’re in there. Thoughts. Preferences. Personality. Access comes first. For parents, caregivers, educators, SLPs, SLPAs, OTs, and graduate students supporting children developing differently. I remember a time when I would have redirected this. When I would have said, “Break is over,” or saved the ball pit for the end. That is before I knew that child-led therapy creates connection, regulation, and trust which is the foundation for language development. When we follow the child’s lead, we gain opportunities to model language that is relevant and meaningful which in return increases the chances it gets picked up. If your child follows directions, reacts emotionally, sings songs, or repeats phrases — but isn’t using flexible words yet… you’re not missing something. Some children develop language from the outside in, not one word at a time. This is often called Gestalt Language Development, and it’s more common in autistic and neurodivergent kids than most parents are ever told. Awareness is the first step 🤍 #ToddlerSpeech #SpeechDelaySupport #NeurodivergentKids #ParentingToddlers #EarlyLanguage

🗣️✨ Word Wednesday: Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) GLP is a form of language development where kids learn language in chunks, not single words 🧩 We might see this in our neurodivergent kiddos. Instead of building one word at a time, they might say full phrases like: 🎬 “Let’s get out of here!” 🥛 “I want milk please!” These aren’t “just echolalia,” they are meaningful communication 💛 Acknowledge and honor your kiddo’s communication. Over time, those chunks break down and become flexible, self-generated language.🌈 #beyondspeechtherapyspecialists #inhometherapy #speechtherapy

My autistic child skips words when they are reading. What can I do to help them? ✅ As a speech therapist who serves mostly autistic children and Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs), I see this a lot when they read! ✅ I encourage you to follow Dr. Jamie Hoerricks @weejaime74 (an autistic PhD who is a GLP) on Substack. Her work has given me so much insight to the GLP brain when it comes to reading!! She has helped me see that when GLPs are skipping words, it’s often because they are trying to make “meaning” of what they’re reading (since they see it as a “whole” rather than the “parts”). 📖📚 Her book “Holistic Language Instruction” can be found on Amazon in my Amazon storefront! 🙏 I encourage you to follow her on Substack! You will learn SO much about how your child processes literacy! ✨Please note this post is for educational purposes only. If you have concerns about your child’s literacy/reading, please reach out to a professional in your area.

With LTC, goals are modified to meet someone's age and prior abilities 🙂 Articulation and sound production doesn't change as we age, so we target very similar goals in therapy. For example, after a stroke, if an adult has a motor speech disorder (like dysarthria), we also work on articulation and sound production! #slp #ltc #childspeechdevelopment #articulation #dysarthria

💬 Comment TALK and I’ll send you the Talk Cards. If your toddler says “nana” instead of “banana” — or doesn’t even attempt it at all — it doesn’t mean they’re not capable. Longer words can feel intimidating. They require coordinating multiple mouth movements in the right order, and some kids avoid trying because it feels too hard. That’s where strategic modeling matters. Instead of correcting or pushing, I slow it down. I use clear visual cues so they can see how the word is formed. I build it into a real moment like snack time. I might even make it playful with an echo mic to lower the pressure. No “say it.” No forcing a repeat. Just consistent, confident modeling that makes big words feel manageable. Sometimes “nana” is the bridge to “banana.” And sometimes silence is just a sign they need more support before they feel ready to try. 💬 Comment TALK and I’ll send you the Talk Cards so you can start modeling longer words with confidence at home. #latetalker #speechdelay #toddlerlanguage #speechtherapyathome #earlyintervention

When people hear “AAC,” they often think it automatically means an iPad or a speech-generating device. But AAC simply stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, which is just a big way of saying any tool that supports communication. That can include gestures, signs, pointing, picture icons, writing, typing… and yes, sometimes a dynamic speech-generating device. In this video, I’m using the MagTalk set from @beetheslp (I’ll link it in my bio). It’s a low-tech picture icon system, and for some children, something simple and visual like this can be a really supportive place to start. Now, a few important things. AAC is not one-size-fits-all. What works beautifully for one child may not be the right fit for another. Some children absolutely benefit from high-tech, dynamic devices, and those can be introduced at any age. There isn’t a “right time,” and using low-tech supports does not prevent you from moving to high-tech later. Also, and this is important, AAC does not delay or hurt spoken language. Research consistently shows that it supports and encourages it. In therapy (and at home), we’re always pairing oral language with gestures, visuals, signs, and modeling, and building communication in multiple ways at the same time. If you’ve been wondering whether AAC might help your child, that’s a really good conversation to have with your speech therapist. You don’t have to navigate that decision alone. AAC isn’t giving up on speech. It’s giving your child more ways to be understood. And that’s always something worth exploring 💛

Many people are surprised by this but… I love modeling negative language! For early gestalt language processors (children who communicate with delayed echolalia), we need to be modeling more potential gestalts (scripts/chunks of language) and more variety. One of those being protesting or negative language. Why? It builds autonomy, reduces frustration, supports regulation and gives children a safer alternative to dysregulation. Modeling only requests or things that you want to hear as a communication partner limits their natural language development. Ready to get started? Consider a course or our updated GLP Handbook for Coaching and Education. Spanish and English versions or bundle them both! Recently updated so we have a parent and professional version! Language grows through motivated, shared play. Playing with other children builds attention, imitation, and turn-taking — the skills language grows from. That’s what helps toddlers move beyond labeling into requesting, commenting, and connecting. That’s exactly what we focus on in our Early Language Pathways Program — a play-based toddler group led by two speech-language pathologists, designed to support real communication. 💬 Comment TALK and I’ll send you the Toddler Talk Bundle. Most parents think helping a late talker means… extra practice, special toys, or doing more all day. But real language growth doesn’t come from turning your house into a therapy room. It comes from small, repeatable moments inside the routines you’re already doing— snack time, bath time, play, getting dressed. That’s exactly why I created the Toddler Talk Bundle— so you know what first words to model, how to model them, and when to use them in real life… without the guesswork or overwhelm. 💬 Comment TALK and I’ll send it to you. #latetalker #toddlerspeech #toddlerlanguage #speechdelay #speechtherapytips
