If I want calm -make sure I’m organised - set up the classroom - set the tone as children come in - plan out my lesson to be needs driven - plan for minimal resources where possible (so I have minimal admin) -respond with curiosity and with generous assumptions of pupils - spend that bit longer checking equipment is ok for everyone - have positive relationships with staff so we are all on the same team Be it. Be about that action. Some days it comes easier than others but really, most of these things are my habits that I’ve created over time that I know support the success of myself and my pupils. What are some of your helpful habits?

SEMH and SEBD are lazy labels professionals give to children when they don’t know what the actual problem is and why they’re are getting dysregulated. Our children deserve better. SEMH is a term used in England and SEBD (used to be used in England) is a term used in Wales. We have to forgive some for using these labels or terms because it is so frequently referred to in the legal system but from a humanistic child-centered point of view IT IS NOT HELPFUL. It doesn’t tell us what the child needs from us in order to thrive. It doesn’t tell us how they best communicate, what their communication or sensory profile is. It doesn’t tell us how they learn. SEMH/SEBD is a label that tells professionals “this is a difficult kid” - AND THAT IS NOT CONDUCIVE TO POSITIVE LONG TERM OUTCOMES! An incredible nurturing and inclusive school where every pupil sincerely felt like they belonged, often after traumatic previous experiences in and outside of school. All pupils at Broadstones must have an EHCP to attend. BUT we also love to meet children where they are at NOW, no perceptions or judgement’s but a fresh mind and 100% connection focussed to ensure they feel that someone is truly invested. . . Sometimes we are asked to try and support with something professionals feel is important which of course we will do BUT sometimes it’s about going in without an agenda and letting the child shape the agenda, session depending on how they feel - they may be carrying something heavy on their mind which they want to offload - so as professionals we need to be there in that moment for them… . . Allow children the freedom to be themselves. Especially when it comes to the healthy expression of how they feel in developmentally appropriate ways. Allowing children to express their emotions is crucial for their development. It helps them to regulate their feelings by engaging the prefrontal cortex, which is key for emotional control. Expressing emotions also lowers stress by reducing activity in the brain’s stress response systems, like the amygdala and hypothalamus. It also supports social skills and cognitive growth by enhancing communication and understanding of social dynamics.
