JOBringing a service dog to college looks a lot different than what people realize. In housing situations, landlords legally can’t ask for certification or extra fees, but they can request documentation that confirms your need for a service or support animal. Once that’s submitted, the process is usually pretty straightforward.
College campuses, on the other hand, are a whole different world. You’re not just dealing with housing, you’re navigating disability services, classroom accommodations, campus events, and even figuring out things like where your dog can take breaks between classes. It’s more complex because your dog isn’t only living with you, they’re working with you everywhere you go: in lectures, labs, cafeterias, and even extracurriculars.
When I brought Atlas to school, that meant paperwork, meetings, and explaining the specific tasks he’s trained to perform. It wasn’t always easy, but it was important to make sure the school understood how vital his role is in helping me stay safe and independent.
Now, Atlas is officially recognized on campus! Instead of worrying about how I’ll manage on my own, I get to focus on actually thriving in this new chapter.
