DEThis is one of those books that’s taken on a life of its own since I made it. It moves in ways I never expected, which is honestly the most exciting part.
I’ve been playing with unusual covers and longer spines (this one has 12 signatures)which gives the whole piece a sense of motion and allows it to sit in unique positions. The handmade paper makes for thicker sections, and that also adds to its length and the way it shifts and settles.
I’m still not sure what its final form is meant to be… or if it even needs one. We’ll see.

The story from Stars
Once upon a time there was a little girl
One night she made friends with the
Years later as she laid in her bed
She spoke to the stars once again
She asked when she could be one of them
And they whispered “you already are”
This was my first go at making something like a book. It’s not a traditional design but has lots of traditional elements in its making. I am a fan of the book linings with illustrations and I adore @littlegoldenbooks so I wanted to add the metallic detail surrounding it and books clad in leather is a symbol of scholarly work.
After I added the pages from the story, I felt it needed illustration. That’s where the clear pages fit in. Literally, they fit into the folds of the book perfectly. Which also reminded me of my younger days, flipping through the encyclopedia and the anatomy part of the book with the clear pages that overlaped to create the human body. Making this book was really capturing of lots of different memories and moments in time.

JAWelcome to ☁️ Cloud Atlas ☁️. A recent piece that is included in the just opened History of the Book exhibit at Page-Walker Arts & History Center in Cary, NC.
Hand-sewn long stitch/link stitch binding based on a Keith A. Smith and Pamela Spitzmueller German book style, with vintage button and ribbon closure.
The wrap around cover is made from Sunset, a handmade, very tactile cotton rag paper by @cavepaper. This was one of a batch of small sheets that were cut offs from a custom project they did several years ago. I’d admired the project online, wishing they would stock this beautiful design. I was lucky to discover a small batch for sale at the annual @guildofbookworkers last fall! Aptly named, and reminding me of aspects of Maxfield Parrish’s clouds and paintings, I let this lovely paper guide the interior color and textures.
The interior contains eight sections composed of commercial and handmade papers of various weights, textures and colors. Several handmade envelope signatures are throughout. At about 4.5 x 5.5 x 1 inches, it’s a nice little book to hold. It’s also available for purchase.
If you’re local or in the area I hope you’ll check out the exhibit. Tomorrow, Friday, March 27 is the artist reception.

SHThis is what custom work looks like.
It begins with the artist’s vision, with the freedom to choose every detail, from the format to the watercolor paper and the closure.
In this case, one book is crafted with Arches Cold Press, the other with Saunders Waterford Cold Press, both wrapped in cotton fabrics with a coastal pattern inspired by her love for the sea.
I brought all the elements together by hand.
The result is a book that feels personal from the very first moment.
Stay tuned, a new project is coming tomorrow.

WEIG is my journal. A quiet cover. A hidden image.
This handmade book holds a small painting inside, only revealed when you look closer. From the outside, it’s linen, stitch, and restraint. Inside, a landscape waits.
I’ve been thinking about how much of what we carry isn’t immediately visible. This piece leans into that with something held, not shown all at once.
