👉 A perfect avalanche performed by one of our students during a solo-renter recurrent flight. The avalanche consists of a snap roll at the apex of a loop, which may sound fairly basic, but the complexities that exist when trying to keep the trajectory of the snap roll on the same line as a loop requires a ton of practice! One layer, snapping too early can cause the aircraft to run out of energy and end you up in a spin, and snapping too late can cause the maneuver to took less like a circle and more like a racetrack. Another layer, even just a couple of knots on the entry make a huge difference in how the airplane will fly through the snap. Too slow and the airplane may not make a full snap, too fast and you could easily over-rotate. 😵‍💫 Now add into the equation snap techniques, stick positioning to avoid burying the aircraft in pitch, rudder timing, and you can start to understand that it’s not as easy as it sounds! No matter what, it’s still one of the most fun maneuvers to work on - and we’re here to help. 🙃

Crosswind Takeoff Brief I set the heading bug on the HSI to runway heading and I use the CDI needle as a wind reference so my student can visualize the crosswind component. Aileron into the wind from the start. Rudder to maintain centerline. Reduce input as airflow and airspeed build. Stay ahead of the weathervane by using rudder into the wind and ailerons neutral.

1️⃣• Slow Flight Most landing problems are slow-flight problems in disguise. If you can’t confidently control the airplane just above stall speed, you’ll always feel behind the airplane in the flare. In slow flight, focus on: – Holding altitude with small, smooth back pressure – Managing yaw with coordinated rudder – Making tiny, precise power adjustments – Keeping your eyes mostly outside The goal isn’t just to pass a maneuver. It’s to get comfortable flying the airplane in that soft, mushy, high angle-of-attack regime — because that’s exactly where landings live. ——- 2️⃣. Practice landings at altitude. Go to a safe altitude and reduce power like you’re on short final. Then practice transitioning to landing attitude while keeping the nose set relative to the horizon. Pay attention to: – How much back pressure it actually takes —how hard it is to keep the nose on the horizon once airspeed starts to bleed off — Mushy controls This is one of my favorite exercises. Holding the nose on the horizon simulates holding the airplane in ground affect, and you’ll notice as the airspeed bleed off how hard it is to knee it there. Which simulates the landing ! ——- 3️⃣. Track centerline. Set up for landing like you normally would, only this time, Don’t. Track down about 20 ft above the runway with power, and try and keep the nose aligned with the centerline. This exercise helps gauge when to start the actual flare and holding the nose over the centerline with rudder helps you master those rudder skills! #generalaviation #pilot #aviationreel #pilotlife #education

My glassy water technique is a modified near shore technique allowing myself to flare just a little bit to smooth out the splashdown. This is counter to initial training but I do it to practice for the potential for an emergency power off landing on glassy water… and because I like smooth landings 😂 power off glassy water landing demo in the next reel

1) Carrying Too Much Speed Airspeed is king especially in the flare. If you’re even 5–10 knots fast: • You’ll float halfway down the runway • The airplane won’t want to settle • You’ll run out of patience before the wing runs out of lift When you’re fast in ground effect, the wing is still producing plenty of lift. So instead of touching down naturally, you’re just… hovering. Then frustration sets in. The fix: • Fly a precise, stabilized approach speed • Trim so you’re not fighting the airplane • Let the airspeed bleed off in the flare The airplane will land when it’s ready. You don’t need to make it. ⸻ 2) Not Looking Outside If you’re staring at the runway numbers or worse inside at the airspeed you’re robbing yourself of depth perception. Good landings happen when your eyes shift: • From the aiming point • To the far end of the runway during the flare Looking long gives you: • Better height awareness • Smoother pitch control • A natural sense of sink rate When you look down, you overcontrol. When you look long, you smooth out. ⸻ 3) Forcing the Airplane on the Ground This one kills consistency. If the airplane won’t land, that usually means one thing: It’s still flying. Common signs you’re forcing it: • Pushing forward after the flare • Trying to “plant it” • Giving up back pressure A proper landing is just a controlled stall inches above the runway. If you keep flying the airplane all the way through holding back pressure and staying patient it will touch down on its own. Every time you force it, you create: • Bounces • Porpoising • Hard landings Patience fixes most bad landings. #generalaviation #pilot #studentpilot #learning #cfi
