5 surprising facts about pigs most people don’t know 🐷 Most folks think pigs are just farm animals. But they’re way more impressive than that. Here’s why: • Smarter than you think Pigs show cognitive ability similar to a 3-year-old child. • Faster than you expect They can sprint faster than most humans. • Better noses than dogs Pigs can detect scents deep underground and across long distances. • Top-tier learners They learn routines faster than many “smart” dog breeds. • Happiness shows on the plate Calm, well-raised pigs show it in their behavior — and in meat quality. When pigs are raised right, they taste right. Save this for later if you love learning where your food comes from. #5facts #piglets #FarmLife #regenerativefarming #pastureraised #RegenerativeFarming

Pigs get a bad rap — but anyone who’s spent real time around them knows the truth: pigs are smart, intentional, and surprisingly clean animals. In this video, you can see Kronk doing what pigs naturally do when they’re given space and proper shelter. His house stays clean, dry, and bedded… and his bathroom? That’s been carefully placed outside the shelter, even in deep snow. Pigs instinctively separate living space from waste, creating designated latrine areas when conditions allow. That’s not training — that’s intelligence. When pigs are crowded or confined, they lose the ability to express these natural behaviors. But in a pasture-based system, with room to move and choices to make, they show just how thoughtful they really are. Clean housing means better health, less odor, and happier animals — even in the middle of winter. Watching Kronk navigate snow, shelter, and cleanliness is a good reminder that good farming isn’t about forcing animals to adapt to bad systems. It’s about designing systems that work with the animal. Smart animals. Clean habits. Deep snow. And a pig doing exactly what nature intended — because he’s allowed to.

A fun post under 1.5 minutes long. Our farm was established in 2013 and I have been educating people about pigs ever since. Please do your research before incorporating a pet pig of any size on your farm. They ALL have the same tendencies. Big or small, just love them all... Or don't get one. ❤️ If you need to be talked out of a pet pig, I am realistic about the pros and cons. You can say I've raised a few. 😂😂

I don’t believe in quick fixes. I believe in consistency, structure, and truly understanding pigs. This information doesn’t come from working with just one pig. I’ve worked with hundreds over the years — different personalities, different attitudes, different behavior challenges. That real-life experience is what I used to build my resources for pig owners. The Pig Parent Academy isn’t built on theory or trends. It’s built on decades of hands-on experience. If you’re looking for steady guidance instead of noise, it’s there for you. Thinking about raising pigs? 🐖 Day 2 of Pig Week was all about feeders vs. breeders… and today we’re going one step deeper. Because breeding pigs on pasture is NOT the same as breeding them in a barn. Day 5 of Pig Week: What I Wish I’d Known About Breeding on Pasture We run a farrow-to-finish operation with our pastured KuneKune pigs, and when I first started researching pig breeding, most of the information I found was geared toward confinement setups—stalls, concrete, heat lamps, farrowing crates, and full-time supervision. But on pasture? Pigs do what pigs were designed to do. Here are a few things I wish I’d understood sooner: 🐷 Sows don’t always use the shelter you provide. Even if you give them a hut or shed, many will still pick their own farrowing spot. Sometimes it’s the most logical place… sometimes it’s the exact opposite. 🐷 Farrowing with multiple sows can work… but it isn’t always smooth. We keep our sows together during farrowing season, and overall it’s gone well. But one year we had a sow neglect her litter, and her sister (who was still pregnant) tried to claim the piglets. We separated them for a few days and helped mom settle in with her babies. 🐷 Keeping the boar with the herd has surprised us—in a good way. Our boar has been an excellent babysitter. We’ve had cold mornings where the piglets were piled up snuggled around dad while mom was out foraging. 🐷 Timing matters when you farrow on pasture. Because we farrow outdoors, we don’t want piglets born in the dead of winter. Moving forward, we plan to pull our boar when we wean piglets (when sows often cycle again), then reintroduce him about 4 months before we want piglets on the ground. 🐷 We no longer castrate our boarlings. This is definitely our most controversial practice, but we’ve processed multiple boars at different ages and have had zero issues with boar taint in our household. Pasture farrowing isn’t “hands-off”… but it’s often far more natural (and less complicated) than people assume. 👇 If you breed pigs, what’s one thing you learned the hard way? And if you’re interested in adding KuneKunes to your farm, send me a DM to get on our waitlist—piglets should be read

🐷 National Pig Day Part 2 🐷 There are many myths and misinformation about pigs, especially pot belly pigs, so check out the list below to learn more about these adorable creatures! 🐽 Despite the misconception that pigs lack intelligence, did you know that pigs are the one of the smartest animals in the world? They're often ranked #5-7 depending on the list, following dolphins and great apes. This can make them destructive housepets because they're severely underestimated in the amount of enrichment and activities they need to prevent boredom. 🐽 Pigs are actually very clean animals! They can't sweat, so to keep themselves cool in the summer heat, they wallow in mud, like Pixie demonstrates in this video. Pigs will also choose specific locations within their habitats to urinate and defecate because they don't want to lay in it. 🐽 Mini, micro, and teacup pigs ARE NOT REAL! These are common phrases thrown around by breeders to make you believe you're getting a pig that will stay tiny forever. The reality is these piglets are pot belly pigs who will grow to be 100-200 pounds by adulthood. 🐽 Although usually raised as housepets, pot belly pigs are still technically farm animals by law. If you live within city limits, it may actually be illegal for you to own a pig. Because they are farm animals, you'll also need a large animal vet because most vets who see dogs and cats typically do not treat pigs. Thanks for celebrating National Pig Day with us and our girl, Pixie!🐷❤ #GFAS #truesanctuary #NationalPigDay

Did you know pigs actually design their own space? 🤯🐷 When given room and choice, pigs naturally create zones for: • sleeping • eating • bathroom breaks They hate messing where they sleep (yes, cleaner than most people 😂). They’ll even: 🐷 choose bathroom spots far from bedding 🐷 rearrange straw and blankets for comfort 🐷 create wallows to cool off 🐷 pick cozy, draft-free sleeping areas in cold weather If pigs aren’t organized, it’s usually because the space is too small or doesn’t allow their instincts to kick in. Give pigs freedom and they become tiny four-legged architects with strong opinions. 💅🐖 Animals are smarter than we give them credit for — especially when we let them be themselves.
